Charlottesville City Council recently voted to no longer celebrate Thomas Jefferson’s birthday as an official holiday. The celebration of his birthday on April 13 will be replaced with another holiday known as Liberation and Freedom Day, which will take place March 3.

The University announced a new early decision option for applicants for the 2020-2021 school year May 29. The early decision plan will be implemented in addition to the early action and regular decision options, which are currently in place.

University President Jim Ryan announced the appointment of Kevin G. McDonald to the position of vice president for diversity, equity and inclusion Monday afternoon. McDonald will assume the position on Aug. 1.

Student staff members at Newcomb Hall have begun to petition against the changes that have resulted from the current reorganization of Newcomb Hall. These changes — which have included hiring freezes and increased responsibilities without increased pay — are due to a budget deficit in the Office of the Dean of Students. Impacted student employees are scheduled to hold a rally at the steps of Peabody Hall May 1 to protest the changes. The rally was originally scheduled for April 26, but moved due to inclement weather.

Student residents at the GrandMarc apartment complex continue to be housed at The Draftsman hotel in downtown Charlottesville for over a month after flooding caused severe interior damage to more than 10 rooms. Several students do not know when they will be able to move back in.

The McIntire School of Commerce announced admissions decisions for the Class of 2021 undergraduate program last Thursday, with a 54.6 percent acceptance rate — a slight increase from last year’s 52.1 percent.

The University Board of Elections released its 2019 Candidate Interim Expenditure Report Friday. The estimated total that will be spent by the 100 candidates for the 2019 election is $1492.66, which is 55 percent of the $2690 candidates actually spent last year on elections. Voting for Student Council elections will take place online from Feb. 26 to March 1.

If the Board of Architectural Review gives signage consent at their meeting next Wednesday, a Chase Bank will officially replace the former Qdoba location on University Ave. that closed in July 2018. The Board’s final step is to approve a Certificate of Appropriateness Application which is slated to occur at its regular meeting.

Lime, the California-based electric scooter company, debuted in Charlottesville last week. Charlottesville city officials approved Lime scooters as the first dockless scooter company to operate in the city Dec. 7. Although Lime initially planned to implement 100 e-scooters and 100 electric bicycles, there are currently 200 scooters and 50 bikes placed around Charlottesville.

A section of Emmet Street will be closed from Dec. 19 to Jan. 14 — the University’s winter break — in order to expedite an ongoing waterline project. The project is part of an overall water main replacement program in Charlottesville that began in October.

The 18th annual Lighting of the Lawn is set to take place Dec. 6 on the Lawn. The LOTL committee, made up of all the Class Councils, has made several adjustments to the event, including a shortened duration, diversified speakers and a presentation of community goals related to the University’s bicentennial.

The University Board of Elections announced the results of First Year Council elections Sunday, naming first-year College students Denzel Mitchell and Jennifer Lin as president and vice president, respectively. The election took place Sept. 24 to 27, following their election as FYC representatives Sept. 13.

Demolition to the Cavalier Inn on the Emmet-Ivy intersection was originally scheduled to begin Monday, but has been delayed due to weather. Construction is now planned to begin sometime this week or next week, but road and sidewalk closures due to the construction in the area started Tuesday.
