The margin of error for was very slim this week for the Virginia softball team. The Cavaliers (16-40, 4-20 ACC) needed to sweep Syracuse and hope that Florida State swept Georgia Tech — who sat just two games above Virginia in the conference standings — to allow the Cavaliers to gain eligibility for the ACC tournament.

After a season strewed with many ups and downs so far, everything came together for the Virginia baseball team, as the Cavaliers downed Liberty 5-2 in a true team effort Wednesday night. With the win, Virginia improved to 26-15 (9-12 ACC) on the season, while Liberty fell to 25-16 (11-4 Big South).

After concluding a successful homestand, it was a disappointing weekend for Virginia softball, which travelled to Tallahassee and was swept by No. 10 Florida State in a three-game series. The Cavaliers fell to 15-36 (4-17 ACC), while the Seminoles improved to 37-11 (17-3 ACC).

Throughout the entire season, the Virginia softball team has been searching for the game where it could put all of its talent together. In a doubleheader against Western Carolina Tuesday, Virginia (9-29, 1-11 ACC) truly seemed to hit its stride, producing 12 runs, committing only one error and surrendering only two runs as it earned the sweep.

At a time when ACC victories are crucial for teams’ postseason ambitions, it was another disappointing weekend for Virginia softball as the team dropped three games to conference rival North Carolina. The Cavaliers fell to 7-28, 1-11 ACC on the season, while the Tar Heels improved to 23-9, 9-2 ACC.
