After seeing the positive impact of Madison House in the Charlottesville community while working as a teacher and principal in Charlottesville City Public Schools, Stephanie Carter will take office in June as the new executive director. With years of experience in education under her belt and a passion for serving the community, Carter said she strives to strengthen the organization’s relationship with local groups, further connect volunteering with academic pathways and increase student involvement.

Assoc. Media Studies Prof. Aynne Kokas and guest Rebeccah Heinrichs, senior fellow at the Hudson Institute and director of the Keystone Defense Initiative, reviewed and debated Congress’ recent legislation to ban TikTok in the U.S. During the talk Tuesday evening, Kokas provided information about the app’s intake of personal data while Heinrichs urged the audience to delete TikTok, saying it “manipulates” users.

More than 100 participants and 25 teams of volunteers met at Carr’s Field Hill this Saturday for Relay for Life’s annual fundraising event. In the months leading up to the annual event, participants raised over $23,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Newly admitted students to the Class of 2027 can explore the sunny corners of Grounds this month by participating in Days on the Lawn, which allows admitted students to experience life at the University. This DOTL will feature school-specific events across four days, as opposed to last year’s programming with six days open to all students.

While 56 percent of University students identify as women, only 33.6 percent of the School of Engineering and Applied Science’s student body is female. Alongside national initiatives to encourage women entering STEM fields, SEAS has seen increases in the numbers of women admitted in the past admissions cycle, along with student efforts to promote female representation both within the school and in the larger Engineering community.

Professional fraternities are closing out their spring recruitment cycles to offer communities built on academic interests. Following the close of the InterSorority Council and Interfraternity Council rush season, professional fraternities follow a similar recruitment process and have turned to social media and department connections to seek out diverse member classes.

Approximately 150 volunteers and 1,000 attendees filled South Lawn to flip and enjoy pancakes at the 19th annual Pancakes for Parkinson’s. Held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., student organizers of the event raised money for the Michael J. Fox Foundation to research Parkinson’s disease and raise awareness.

As the fatigued University community worked through midterm exams, students were able to partake in an abundance of activities with their families during Family Weekend held from Friday to Sunday. Activities ranged from self-guided tours, such as at the Harrison Institute and Small Special Collections Library, to meeting with staff of different departments and schools within the University.
