The University’s Comprehensive Cancer Center is working to establish the Center for Systems Analysis of Stress-Adapted Cancer Organelles, which seeks to find the cause of cancer in individual organelles, in the wake of a $12 million grant awarded for their efforts to disrupt tumor growth. Biomedical Engineering Prof. Kevin Janes and Matthew Lazzara, professor of chemical engineering and biomedical engineering, will direct the new center.

Following the one-year mark of the World Health Organization declaring COVID-19 a pandemic, the United States is steadily conducting vaccinations. For the past few months, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and the Moderna vaccine have dominated the industry. However, the Center for Disease Control approved Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose COVID-19 vaccine for people 18 and older in the United States on Jan. 31.

For decades, the general public has only associated smoking as a risk factor for lung cancer, but health experts now know that there are many more factors that can contribute to the development of lung diseases. However, because of the public’s continued false perception, non-smokers with lung cancer face increasing stigma.

It is no question that the issue of racial inequality has been at the forefront of the United States for the past 150 years, and since the start of the pandemic, these problems have not gone away, presenting a particularly deadly concern for Black and immigrant communities. Systemic health inequalities have contributed to people of color having higher risk of contracting COVID-19 and experiencing worse outcomes, including higher death rates.

In an effort to personalize the learning experience, professors have diversified their teaching styles in an effort to best engage students despite the challenges of online learning.
