Despite just being one fish — a writer and Arts & Entertainment Senior Associate — in the grand scope of The Cavalier Daily, I cannot help but feel as if this newspaper has contributed so much to my University experience. No one enters and leaves college as the same person — it is normal to have gone through many groups of friends, different majors, new career aspirations and most of all, conflicting ideals on the kind of person one wants to be. That was certainly the case for me, at least.

The horror genre has been redefined in the last decade. The jump-scares, cheap gore and killers in masks that were once the forefront of mainstream horror have been replaced with psychological fear that spills into the absurd, grotesque and intelligently chilling.

Across her previous eight records, Lana Del Rey has created an iconography of cherry cola, cigarettes, sycamore trees, seedy dive bars and American flags flying defiantly and dejectedly. On her ninth album, titled “Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd,” Del Rey expands the dreamlike, liminal space that her music exists in, revealing lyrical ruminations that are consistently profound, occasionally disquieting and never dull.

For its closing night Sunday, the Virginia Film Festival screened “Empire of Light” at a packed Paramount Theater with an introduction by Virginia Film Festival director Jody Kielbasa. The movie was written and directed by Academy Award-winning director Sam Mendes, known for his previous work on “American Beauty” and “1918.” This film marks Mendes’ first project as both director and solo screenwriter — a quality felt especially through how personal the project feels.

After two years of limitations due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Virginia Film Festival is once again returning to Charlottesville to celebrate its 35th anniversary and provide local movie-goers a glimpse into what is currently happening in the world of cinema. Running from Nov. 2 through Nov. 6, the program will feature over 100 screenings — ranging from international films to documentaries to movies garnering award buzz — as well as a stellar roster of speakers.

With the release of their fifth album “Keep On Smiling” — released Sept. 9 — the Northern Irish band Two Door Cinema Club deviates from their more well-known alternative rock style. The trio composed of members Alex Trimble, Sam Halliday and Kevin Baird delves into dance punk territory, highlighted by consistent techno-funk backtracks.

While many popular jewelry brands focus primarily on aesthetics, second-year Darden student Liana Lei had a larger scope in mind when she co-founded feminist jewelry brand LA FOI Jewelry alongside fellow co-founders Eko Liu and Annie Shen. In the short time that has passed since its creation in August of 2021, the brand has already grown to feature and successfully sell six different jewelry collections, all with the aim of promoting affordable fashion, sustainability and female empowerment.

An exhibition titled “Nature, Us and the Future — A Group Exhibition with Female Perspectives” of over 60 artworks by six artists — Christen Yates, Judith Ely, Karen Rosasco, Lesli Devito, Phyllis Koch-Sheras and Susan Patrick — is currently on display at the Guild Gallery until April 15 for the public to view. The pieces range from abstract pieces to realistic paintings to interactive activities, but all come together to express the artists’ common love for nature, in whatever form it may be.

Adam McKay's satirical sci-fi movie, "Don’t Look Up," features an almost overwhelmingly star-studded cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Rob Morgan, Mark Rylance, Cate Blanchett and Timothée Chalamet amongst others — even including pop singer Ariana Grande and rapper Kid Cudi.

The Board of Visitors will hold an educational workshop on proposed undergraduate tuition and fee increases followed by a public comment session in the Ern Commons Building at 3 p.m. Thursday. Students and community members were able to register for online comment until Wednesday at 5 p.m. and in-person comments will be accommodated on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The University received a record total of 3,442 early decision applications and 31,152 early action applications for the Class of 2026, a 17 percent increase in early decision applications and a seven percent increase in early action applications compared to last year. This increase held across nearly all schools and demographics.

Students dressed in neon and glitter walked into the Jefferson Theatre Thursday anticipating an engaging show and walked out more than satisfied. With EDM events being a rare occurrence at the University, the Up & Up Festival — sponsored by Monster Energy — brought smoke and flashing lights to Grounds in front of a sold-out crowd.

The Virginia Film Festival held an evening screening Oct. 28 at the Paramount Theatre for “Last Night in Soho” — a psychological thriller directed by Edgar Wright starring Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy.
