The Board of Trustees of the Sky Alland Scholarship has selected third-year Commerce student Kate McGinn as this year’s recipient. This prestigious scholarship recognizes rising fourth-year students who have shown humility, devotion to the University and a capacity for leadership during their years in college. The scholarship covers full tuition and fees for the next academic year.

Charlottesville City Councilor Kathy Galvin spoke on local zoning, land use and affordable housing with the University Democrats at the group’s weekly meeting Wednesday. Galvin graduated from the University with a Master’s of Architecture and is an adjunct faculty member in the Architecture School.

Gov. Ralph Northam spoke Saturday morning as part of the annual, three-day Virginia Young Democrats Convention. The Virginia Young Democrats is the official youth branch of the Democratic Party of Virginia. Over the course of the weekend, the Young Democrats attended trainings and workshops, elected officers and heard from different speakers. The 2018 convention was the largest VAYD convention in many years and hosted at the University for the first time since 2009. 280 people from 30 different chartered clubs attended the conference.

Author Ibram X. Kendi delivered a keynote lecture entitled “Racist Ideas in America: From Slavery to Black Lives Matter” Friday afternoon at the University Baptist Church as part of the Virginia Festival of the Book. The event was sponsored by the Center for Race and Public Education in the South in the Curry School of Education and the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture.

U.Va. alumnus Chris Long — who played football for the University and now for the Philadelphia Eagles — will be the valediction speaker at this year’s graduation. The Valedictory Exercises will take place May 18, the day before the Final Exercises May 19 and 20 in which outgoing University President Teresa Sullivan giving the commencement address.

The Board of Visitors Academic and Student Life Committee met in the Rotunda last Friday to hear a presentation on the Honor Audit Commission report. The report included survey work that found, among other things, that most faculty respondents think other professors often decline to formally report student honor offenses and instead handle such matters themselves .

TEDxUVA hosted its annual conference in the Rotunda Saturday. This year’s theme was “5 Seconds of Courage” and included seven speakers who gave 18-minute speeches on the topic of overcoming boundaries and setbacks to achieve their goals.

University President Teresa Sullivan will be delivering the commencement address at Final Exercises May 19 and 20 following a University tradition for the outgoing president to deliver the address. Sullivan will be succeeded in fall 2018 by James E. Ryan, a School of Law graduate, former faculty member and current dean of Harvard. The past five University presidents have also partaken in this tradition.

The Advisory Committee on the Future of the Historic Landscape held a public input session Friday to help frame recommendations for the Deans Working Group, headed by Law School Dean Risa Goluboff, on the display of the visible historic symbols on Grounds. There were around 50 staff, faculty and students in attendance.

Student Council will propose the University chapter of Young Americans for Freedom be recognized as a Contracted Independent Organization by the council’s Representative Body during its first meeting of the spring semester. The decision comes after the conservative group sent a letter to the University claiming that Student Council violated the YAF’s constitutional rights and state law when previously denying it CIO status.

HOOliday Dining is a joint initiative run by the Student Council, Multicultural Student Services and the International Residential College to provide dining options for those staying on Grounds over the break.

A panel addressing health and education challenges facing women took place Monday morning as part of the Women’s Global Leadership Forum. The discussion was facilitated by Rebecca Dillingham, director of the University’s Center for Global Health, and was comprised of of women who gave their global perspectives on the issues.

A neon column displayed near the Rotunda and the “Lumina Pavilion” sculptures on the Homer Flat will be relocated in the next few weeks. They were placed on Grounds in celebration of the University’s Bicentennial, which launched Oct. 6.

Over 3,500 University alumni who had graduated in the last four years and their guests were invited back for the Young Alumni Reunions in the Amphitheatre Saturday. The party lasted for three hours and included food and drinks, a DJ and a photobooth.

Monday marked the start of “International Week of the Girl” on Grounds, which is an extended celebration of the United Nations Day of the Girl that takes place Oct. 11. A week of events and activities is being hosted by Girl Up at U.Va. and United Nations Women USNC at U.Va.
