With the out-of-conference schedule almost completed, the No. 4 Virginia men’s basketball team (8-0, 0-0 ACC) has exceeded preseason expectations thus far. The Cavaliers already have two Top 25 wins against then-No. 25 Wisconsin (7-1, 1-0 Big Ten) and No. 24 Maryland (7-1, 1-0 Big Ten), both of which have continued to climb despite losing to Virginia. Another impressive win came against Dayton (4-3, 0-0 A10), which provided a spirited second half challenge during the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament last month.

Junior small forward Braxton Key received a hardship waiver from the NCAA last week, granting him immediate eligibility for the 2018-19 season. Key, who transferred from Alabama following a regression in his sophomore season, immediately elevates Virginia’s defensive ability in the second unit and could create nightmarish matchups for opponents when paired with sophomore small forward De’Andre Hunter.

The ACC has released its schedule for the upcoming 2018-19 men’s basketball season, and the contrast between Virginia’s in-conference and out-of-conference opponents cannot be more clear. Virginia has a few interesting matchups before its ACC debut against Florida State in January, but they pale in comparison to one of the most competitive in-conference schedules Coach Tony Bennett has faced.

In an article last week summarizing this year’s cycle of men’s basketball recruiting, I made a strong assumption that there would be no attrition to the team through the NBA Draft. That is unlikely, as many of the Cavaliers have the talent to play in the NBA, and several could perform well enough this season to make it into the 2019 NBA Draft.

With the recent addition of Holly Springs, N.C. forward Kadin Shedrick, recruitment for Virginia men’s basketball’s 2019 class has ended for the fall. Assuming there are no losses due to injuries or the draft, the Cavaliers have filled every scholarship in their roster, making this an excellent point to look over the recruiting turnaround that has occurred so far this year.

The Virginia men’s tennis program won a convincing 4-1 victory over Louisville in the ACC tournament this weekend, but fell to No. 1 Wake Forest Virginia (13-12, 5-7 ACC) was seeded No. 9 in the tournament, while Louisville (15-11, 5-7 ACC) was seeded No. 8.

The Virginia men’s tennis team has faced a tough slew of defeats recently, winning only one out of the past seven matches. Part of the reason for such a dismal record was a back loaded schedule, in which the Cavaliers played some of the toughest teams in the nation on the road and No. 1 Wake Forest Demon Deacons (22-2, 11-1 ACC) at home. Virginia was recently able to pull out an upset victory over No. 22 North Carolina State (16-7, 6-6 ACC), but has been unable to put together any other victories since late March.

This weekend, Virginia played on the road of two of its toughest opponents to date, taking on No. 21 Duke and No. 5 North Carolina. The Cavaliers’ contest against Duke (13-8, 4-2 ACC) was hard fought, with the Blue Devils only able to escape an at-home upset by one match — winning the overall team match 4-3. Virginia fared somewhat worse at Chapel Hill, falling to the Tar Heels in a 6-1 blowout.

The men’s tennis team defeated Clemson in a 4-2 win on Sunday, rallying in singles play after losing the doubles point. Two of Virginia’s ITA ranked players, sophomore Carl Söderlund (No. 38) and junior Aswin Lizen (No. 32), won their matches in straight sets, while freshman Gianni Ross (No. 120) fell to Clemson’s sophomore Simon Baudry.

Last Sunday, the Virginia men’s tennis team achieved their first victory over a ranked team this season. The Cavaliers (9-5, 2-1 ACC) defeated the then-No.18 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-8, 2-1 ACC) in a 6-1 blowout that included impressive wins on courts that the Cavaliers normally lose. Virginia began the match by beating the highly esteemed Notre Dame doubles lineup, with junior Aswin Lizen and freshman Gianni Ross teaming up to take down the #55 ranked Fighting Irish team of freshman Tristan McCormick and senior Brendon Kempin on the No.1 Court. Both Lizen and Ross would go on to win their matches on the No. 3 and No. 2 courts respectively, with Ross dispatching Notre Dame’s freshman Richard Clamarra at a breakneck speed.

The Virginia men’s tennis team won a hard-fought victory over the Mercer Friday. In one of the Cavaliers’ (6-3) best overall performances so far this year, the team took the doubles point after two quick victories on courts No. 1 and No. 3 and proceeded to win all of the top four courts in singles. Problems with the bottom of the roster continued to plague Virginia, however, and the Bears (7-2) were able to take courts No. 5 and No. 6 in singles, putting the final score at 5-2.

The Cavalier men’s tennis team will take on the Mercer Bears at home this Friday in its first outdoor match of the season.The Cavaliers have so far had a season with mixed results, losing matches against many of the larger schools they have played against. However, they have won three of their past four matches over the past two weekends.

On Sunday, the Virginia men’s tennis team beat both Liberty and Monmouth. It was an incredible show of endurance by the young team, and one of its most dominating performances of the season so far. Freshman Matthew Lord distinguished himself, winning four points for the Cavaliers (5-3) after a frustrating start to the season.

The Virginia men’s tennis team (2-2) is looking to end it’s two-loss drought this weekend with a pair of games against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels (2-4) and the Kentucky Wildcats (3-2).
