In the bustling and chaotic lives of University students, finding positivity often takes a backseat. While mental health resources are available — such as Counseling and Psychological Services and TimelyCare — Hopelessly Yellow promotes mental health in a unique way through its digital platform. This group utilizes an abundance of artistic mediums which are all integrated through their brand image of positivity.

Students who enjoy dancing find themselves immersed in a myriad of dance forms at the University — from K-pop to swing dancing and everything in between. Yet, students who have not had the opportunity to explore dance before college may struggle to find a place to start. One student-run dance organization hopes to change this — The Mighty.

Striking tones of black and white images illuminate the walls of the Fralin Museum of Art as the exhibition titled “Holly Wright: Vanity” sits in its new temporary home in Charlottesville. First opened at the Fralin Aug. 31, Holly Wright’s photography series — which brings together selections from three bodies of work, “Final Portraits,” “Vanity” and “Poetry” — dissects the intricacies of communication and the impermanence of life through close-up and full-length stills of the human body.

Both dancing clubs and service organizations can be found all around the University — however, one Contracted Independent Organization combines the two activities with volunteering in a novel and engaging way. Founded in 2017, Ballet & Books is a national non-profit organization that pairs mentors with young girls, using social interaction and movement-based activities to enact and embody the material they read.

Spectrum Theatre, one of the University’s student-run theater organizations, launched their spring 2024 production of Steven Sater and Jessie Nelson’s musical, “Alice by Heart” in the Student Activities Building Thursday. Xander Tilock, the show’s director and second-year College student, introduced the show by characterizing it as “a question not an answer.” An exploration of grief and trauma, the production perfectly embodies Spectrum's mission to “challenge and engage audiences” by representing the blurry boundaries between reality and illusion.

Eyes are drawn to the scene as the band produces a captivating tune — a combination of bass, guitar, drums and vocals that echoes through the hearts of homesick first-year students seeking comfort and connection.
