The Lifting the Shades committee of Take Back the Night at the University held a discussion concerning the problems minority groups face with sexual assault last Wednesday in Newcomb Gallery. Led by the chair of the event, third-year College student Anna Taylor, four panelists from the University and Charlottesville community answered questions in front of 20 students specifically relating to the intersection of race and sexual assault.

At the beginning of the 2017-18 academic year, the College of Arts and Sciences introduced the New College Curriculum emphasizing creative and interdisciplinary learning as an alternative to the Traditional and Forums curricula. The curriculum consist of three areas of focus — the Engagements, the Literacies and the Disciplines — where students must earn a certain number of credits in each before graduating.

The University was recently named the best university in the state of Virginia for LGBTQ students by BestColleges.com and Campus Pride. The ranking combined BestColleges.com’s academic and affordability metrics with Campus Pride’s Index score of five stars.

Khizr Khan, the father of late Army Capt. Humayun Khan, spoke to a crowd of several hundred at Charlottesville High School Thursday as part of the Virginia Festival of the Book. In an event titled “Hope and Sacrifice,” Khan discussed his recently released books “An American Family” and “This is Our Constitution.” The first book describes Khan’s journey as an immigrant to the U.S. and his family’s story, while the second is aimed at educating middle schoolers about the the U.S. Constitution.

The Muslim Students Association and nonprofit organization Islamic Relief USA hosted a fundraiser banquet Saturday night where proceeds went to aid Rohingya refugees fleeing Myanmar. Saad Tasleem, the keynote speaker at the event, discussed the importance of donation — highlighting his own faith of Islam.

Khizr Khan will deliver a talk March 22 as a part of the Virginia Festival of the Book — an event organized by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities aimed to bring writers and readers together. Khan will discuss his book “An American Family,” as well as his experiences as an immigrant, democracy and the rights of Americans.

The University Democrats hosted Law School Dean Risa Goluboff Wednesday night in the Physics Building for a discussion on free speech and racial equality on Grounds. Goluboff — chair of the Deans Working Group — discussed a recent policy recommendation that would regulate the expression of groups and individuals on Grounds who are unaffiliated with the University.
