Under former coach Mike London, Virginia’s offense seemed stuck in the mud. The offense was slow, as in 2014, they ranked 83rd in the country in pace, measured in seconds per play. They weren’t overly effective either, as they were 80th in yards per game, and 92nd in points per game. Their style was vanilla — heavy on runs up the middle, with big blockers and big backs.

When all eyes were on Beijing, China during the 2008 Summer Olympics, the Cavaliers sent nine representatives to compete and coach on the grandest athletic stage of them all. Eight years later, the Cavaliers have now doubled that number. Starting Aug. 5 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 18 individuals with ties to Virginia – 16 athletes and two coaches – will represent seven different countries in the 2016 Summer Olympics. Hatesbirds262: Hey reddit, I’m a 36-year-old man from western PA, and when I was 12 years old an errant sparrow hit me in the throat, paralyzing my vocal cords and permanently keeping my voice in a mid-pubescent range. Ask me anything?

Over the years, I’ve made a habit of reading the Washington Post’s sports page while eating breakfast — nearly always Quaker Oatmeal Squares and toast. And lately, there’s been more and more baseball articles, because once again, it’s that time of year. Thank goodness, too, given that college hoops is finishing up.

A payoff pitch at the knees froze sophomore first baseman Pavin Smith for the final out Sunday evening, as North Carolina State defeated Virginia 5-2 to take the weekend series. His bat in one hand and helmet in the other, a flustered Smith trotted off the diamond. He, along with sophomore centerfielder Adam Haseley, had never looked so lost at the plate over nine innings. Each went hitless and struck out four times.

Nearly a year ago, then-No. 5 Louisville swept a three-games series from Virginia baseball in Charlottesville. After his then-No. 16 Cavaliers fell 4-0 in the finale, coach Brian O’Connor convened a team meeting. His message was direct — either his guys would play with energy and an identity, or they wouldn’t go anywhere, especially Omaha. The rest of Virginia’s 2015 season is memorable history.

The Virginia wrestling team went into last year’s ACC Championships as the underdog. While the team was ranked No. 18 nationally, they had a losing conference record of 2-3 and were seeded fourth overall. The Cavaliers walked into the hostile Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, Pa. with something to prove — and they left as champions.

As the No. 10 Virginia men’s lacrosse team exited Vidas Field in Philadelphia, Pa after a sound 14-7 win against Drexel, it recognized there was still room for improvement. The Cavaliers (1-1) ultimately cruised to a victory over the Dragons (0-1) Saturday, but took 51 shots overall, while shooting 16 in the first period and holding onto a lead of only 2-1.
