My Spring Break should have been a Beach Blanket Bingo fiasco to remember. Unfortunately the bingo ball caller that is my conscience got all triflin' and went SPF 5 million on my fun in the sun. I'd be half a millimeter away from a righteous hi-five when my arm would go limp. I'd try to say, "Duuuude" and add multiple u's like I was happening, but my tongue would go Tom Deluca-I've-just-been-hypnotized-and-I-canna-say-it paraplegic.

To immerse yourself completely into another culture is not something many Americans ever get the chance to do, so I was eager to jump at the opportunity presented to me through the University's International Studies Office to experience both the pleasures and difficulties of life in Italy. So far this honestly has been one of the best experiences of my life.

IF STATES can be schizophrenic, Virginia is. In the Commonwealth, internet companies build over horse farms and one-time hippies teach the children of Republican politicians. The legislature represents, appropriately, this combination of looking forward and remaining stuck in the past. Some of the General Assembly's latest moves show that Virginians have gotten past the days of "Old Massa," as long-overdue legislation receives broad approval. Other actions indicate a depressing inability to see the 21st century, high-tech millionaire governor be damned.

CHRISTMAS, right up there with the Chinese New Year, has always been my favorite time of year. Perhaps it is because the decorations for this holiday have been put out two months in advance, but I have always felt especially happy and cheerful during this holiday season. Gone is my cynicism toward the world, and as cliched as it may sound, Christmas seems to bring out the good in everybody. It is said that Christmas and the holiday season always has been a time for children and youth. However, I still look forward to Dec. 25 with the same degree of excitement, and I think this is because of the strong attention that is paid to family.

Two weeks ago, Virginia sophomore quarterback Matt Schaub got the break he was looking for. He walked onto the field Oct. 6 in the second quarter against No. 25 Maryland with nothing to lose and everything to gain. He was coming off the bench, looking to be the spark that would jump start Virginia's anemic offense and propel the Cavaliers to a big victory. Schaub did provide the spark, but the Virginia defense didn't pull through for the win.

Before he enrolled in the University, Virginia senior midfielder Steve Totten found out a broken jaw can come in handy once in a while. The quiet Allentown, N.J., native suffered a bone-breaking blow to the jaw in the fall of his senior year of high school, which made for interesting conversation - or lack thereof - during his men's soccer recruiting visit to the University.

AS WE PLAY Penn State on Thursday, there will be the obvious student unity against this on-field foe. However, there are also issues much larger than an athletic contest to consider as we go into this week.

"America's luck has run out," said one journalist covering this morning's tragic events in New York City and Washington, D.C. At about 9 a.m. this morning, a highjacked commercial airplane crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center, located at the tip of Manhattan's financial district. Some twenty minutes later, a second plane crashed into the adjoining tower.

The play seemed simple enough. A simple pitch to the right, with some broken tackles. The run continued up the right sideline and seemed to be good for a first down. Then disaster struck.

THE LIST is long and impressive: Secretary of State Colin Powell, Environmental Protection Agency Director Christie Todd Whitman, Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter, New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, New York Gov. George Pataki, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, to name just a few. These prominent politicians from all over the country have one thing in common: They are all pro-choice Republicans.
