This past weekend saw Virginia track and field stay home in Charlottesville to host the Virginia Challenge Friday and Saturday. The event was filled with Cavaliers making it onto Virginia all-time lists and recording personal bests and was highlighted by junior Nathan Mountain toppling the Virginia steeplechase record and running the “A” cut for the upcoming Olympic Trials. The weekend was wrapped up with a Senior Day celebration Saturday that honored the team’s graduating athletes.

While many Virginia men’s basketball fans have yet to get over this season’s disheartening debacle, it is time for Cavalier supporters to turn their collective attention to former members of the program who are in the professional ranks. The NBA Playoffs are imminent, and many of Virginia’s former heroes will be chasing the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy. Here are a few Cavaliers that have a chance at hardware in 2024.

Virginia women’s basketball traveled to Villanova, Pa. Sunday afternoon to take on Villanova at Finneran Pavilion. The Cavaliers (16-16, 7-11 ACC) were coming in off an impressive performance in the first round of the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament, beating High Point by 22 points, while the Wildcats (20-12, 11-7 Big East) were led by junior guard Lucy Olsen’s 29 points in their own first-round victory over Virginia Commonwealth. Both teams were hoping to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament, but Olsen led Villanova to another win, beating Virginia 73-55.

Virginia women’s squash has the chance to be the strongest it has ever been following a successful season last year as the Cavaliers return the bulk of a rotation that finished ranked No. 4 in the country. But in order to break into the stronghold the top three teams have on the sport, each returning player — as well as potentially a newcomer — will need to be at their best to persevere over a long season.

My home had always been one place and one place only — Bucks County, Pa. The relationship I have with my home — one of feeling warm, safe, at ease and embraced — has only become amplified because of my time away from my Pennsylvania home and my family. Now, I am only in Bucks County for three and half months of the year, while the other eight and a half are spent in Charlottesville as a University student. However, time away from where I grew up, and more time in Charlottesville, is starting to make me realize that home is not defined by one place.

After opening the 2023 season 1-1 at home with an upset win against No. 5 Penn State and a loss to No. 14 Liberty, No. 6 Virginia field hockey traveled to Philadelphia, Pa., for their first road trip of the season. The Cavaliers (3-1, 0-0 ACC) pulled out a 2-1 victory Friday night at No. 11 St. Joseph’s to kick off the trip and then finished strong with a 6-0 sweep at Temple Sunday afternoon.

Many familiar faces have left the program, but a new youth movement gives the roster all the potential in the world. Among the leaders of the new orange and blue will be Christian Bliss, a four-star point guard from Newtown, Pa.

No. 4 Virginia men’s lacrosse bounced back from their loss last week to defeat No. 12 Syracuse by a score of 19-12. The Cavaliers (9-3, 3-2 ACC) started off hot and the Orange (8-6, 1-4 ACC) were never able to catch up. With the win, Virginia extended their streak of wins after a loss to 19 games.

Virginia softball traveled to Vartabedian Field in Pittsburgh, Pa. this weekend to take on Pitt, going 3-0 against the Panthers (14-14, 0-6 ACC). The Cavaliers (23-10, 4-5 ACC) had a strong offensive showing that included a mercy rule win in the first game of the series. After getting swept by Clemson last weekend, Virginia has now won six out of its last 10 games and is just outside the upper echelon of the ACC.

No. 10 Virginia women’s lacrosse traveled to Robins Stadium in Richmond Wednesday to face in-state opponent Richmond. The Cavaliers (6-2-0, 2-1-0 ACC) built up a lead early in the match, leaving the first half with a slightlead. However, the team struggled to maintain the same level of defense in the second half of regulation, taking the Spiders (6-2-0, 0-1-0 CAA) into overtime and eventually losing 16-15 in the second extra period.

This weekend, No. 5 Virginia men’s squash traveled to the 2023 College Squash Association National Collegiate Men’s Squash Team Championships at the Ferris Athletic Center in Hartford, Conn. The Cavaliers (13-7) were unsuccessful in the final team event of the year, losing all three matches to Yale, Cornell and Princeton.

No. 5 Virginia women’s squash traveled to Philadelphia, Pa. this past weekend to compete in the 2023 National Collegiate Women’s Team Squash Championships. The Cavaliers (13-7) competed in the Howe Championship bracket, the top bracket for the CSA tournament, for the second consecutive year. Although the squad only finished fourth, it was the best finish in program history.

The Virginia women’s basketball team traveled to the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pa., Wednesday night, where they cruised to an 89-68 against Penn State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Cavaliers (9-0, 0-0 ACC) remain undefeated and continued their best start to a season since 1991 with the victory while the Nittany Lions (7-1, 0-0 Big Ten) were handed their first loss of the season.
