Over the course of two years, a debate quietly unfolded over a development proposal on Stadium Road, just steps from central Grounds. In February, this controversy became public for the first time with the rapid demolition and clearing of a massive parcel of land that will ultimately house the VERVE student apartment complex. The demolished property, a small 62-unit complex, will be replaced by the new tallest building in the city. With 12 stories and 463 units, the development will permanently tarnish the landscape of the University and the greater Charlottesville area. For years to come, VERVE should serve as a striking warning against compromising on zoning procedures in pursuit of a quick fix to one of Charlottesville’s most complicated problems — housing.

After a series loss to NC State, Virginia baseball returned to the commonwealth with a chance to get back in the win column at VCU. With an impressive early offensive performance, the Cavaliers (18-13, 7-8 ACC) did just that — slugging past the Rams (10-22, 4-8 Atlantic 10) 13-0.

Although The Calusa Cup only featured nine teams, it was still a lineup of many big-time programs. No. 6 Louisiana State, No. 13 UCLA and No. 10 Florida represented some of the best squads in the entire country. Also competing were conference rivals Louisville and Wake Forest, as well as Purdue — winners of the Puerto Rico Classic in February — who are solid as well.

I’ve never appreciated the life that warm weather breathes back into the University more than recently. Much like the crowds of people laying out near the Rotunda, these warm temperatures have also inspired me to study outside. However, not every outdoor study space is created equally, and certain qualities are necessary in order to qualify it as an elite spot. With any luck, abiding by the criteria listed below will help you find “the one” just in time for your finals cram session.

After serving only one year of its minimum four-year termination, the University quietly reduced Theta Chi fraternity’s sanction to only one year after the fraternity appealed the original decision. In a statement to The Cavalier Daily, Marsh Pattie, associate vice president for student affairs, said that the University chose to grant Theta Chi’s appeal because it was concerned with the conduct of former hazing investigator Donovan Golich.

The No. 6 Virginia men’s tennis team showcased its depth and resilience this weekend, earning two wins over ACC teams in Georgia Tech and No. 25 Clemson to extend its win streak to five matches. Virginia played both matches without standout freshman Rafael Jódar, who was competing in an ATP Challenger Tour event in Cuernavaca, Mexico. His absence prompted a shift in the lineup, with several Cavaliers stepping up in both doubles and singles play to help carry the team, solidifying its status as a serious contender heading into the final stretch of ACC play.

The No. 5 Virginia women’s tennis team wrapped up its final ACC road weekend with a strong 4-1 win Sunday morning over Syracuse at Drumlins Country Club in Syracuse, N.Y. The Cavaliers (17-4, 9-2 ACC) extended their winning streak to five matches and got their 13th consecutive victory over the Orange (8-9, 1-9 ACC) in an all-around dominant performance.

Virginia desperately needed to defeat NC State Sunday. A second consecutive ACC series win would signal, finally, that the Cavaliers (17-13, 7-8 ACC) were back to playing winning baseball, that good things were on the horizon.

Florida State was ready to exact its revenge in full Sunday after its defeat Friday and narrow victory Saturday, and to say it came out swinging is an understatement. Back once again at Joanne Graf Field in Tallahassee, Fla., Virginia was hoping to pick up a series win against the Seminoles (36-6, 11-1 ACC) that bumped up both its conference and national rankings. Instead, it incurred a 13-2 loss in five innings.

Virginia baseball as it exists today would be nowhere near the same without Coach Brian O’Connor. Before his arrival, the Cavaliers had only won the ACC twice in program history. What’s more, they had never been to the College World Series and had only reached the NCAA Tournament three times.

In the suffocating heat of early April, Virginia men’s lacrosse traveled to Chapel Hill to take on No. 8 North Carolina in its second ACC game. The Cavaliers (5-6, 0-2 ACC) were fresh off a loss to No. 7 Syracuse, in which, despite a sputtering offense showing signs of life, a late cold spell ended up being their demise.

Following two straight away games, Virginia women’s lacrosse returned to Klöckner Stadium Saturday to take on an ACC foe in Louisville. The Cavaliers (9-4, 4-3 ACC) took care of business swiftly, dominating the Cardinals (6-8, 1-6 ACC) by a 17-3 margin.

After Friday’s upset, it was not going to be easy for No. 25 Virginia softball to defeat No. 8 Florida State for a second straight time. Unfortunately, it was not necessarily the Seminoles’ (35-6, 10-1 ACC) fight for victory that resulted in a Cavalier (27-11, 8-6 ACC) loss today, but rather a handful of mistakes that ended up making the difference in the final score.
