Everyone inside John Paul Jones Arena inhaled. They had seen freshman forward Ishan Sharma, alone on the wing, receive a pass. A stillness fell as Sharma rose up to shoot, punctured by a solitary shriek.

Finals — which occurred between Monday Dec. 9 and Tuesday Dec. 17 — can be a challenging time for students. To alleviate some of the stress that accompanies this period, organizations such as the Honor Committee, the Writing Center and Class Councils offered a variety of handouts before finals concluded, including free snacks, energy drinks and coffee. Students who used these resources said they appreciated this support as they finished classes and completed their exams.

The Board of Visitors’ Committee on the College at Wise met Friday to discuss the school’s enrollment, student life, fundraising efforts and scholarship programs. College at Wise Chancellor Donna Price Henry said the school is “doing all the right things,” when it comes to maintaining enrollment and preparedness for the future.

If something, somewhere along the rollercoaster of this Virginia men’s soccer season, tickled your memory, there’s probably a good reason why. The season featured the same early-season struggles, early-October resurgence and high NCAA Tournament seed as the previous two. And the same conclusion, a loss at home to an unseeded team.

For Virginia women’s basketball, shaking a frustrating losing streak is paramount. The Cavaliers (6-5, 0-1 ACC) have now lost four straight games, with the latest blemish coming against Boston College Sunday at John Paul Jones Arena. Unable to keep up with the quick lead that the Eagles (7-4, 1-0 ACC) built, Virginia fell to Boston College 57-72 — making this its first conference game and first conference loss of the season.

Virginia squash competed in its first two contests away from the McArthur Squash Center Friday and Saturday. The No. 6 women’s team (4-2, 0-0 MASC) was defeated by No. 1 Harvard, but took care of business handily against No. 11 Dartmouth. On the men’s side, the No. 6 Cavaliers (4-2, 0-0 MASC) were victorious versus the No. 5 Crimson and No. 12 Big Green in close affairs.

After a two-week break from competition following a loss to No. 8 Michigan, the Virginia wrestling team was back in action with duals Friday and Saturday. The Cavaliers (4-1, 0-0 ACC) started off at home with a 25-11 win over Pennsylvania and then took a short drive to Lexington, Va., Saturday to beat VMI 40-3. The two wins restored Virginia’s momentum, and the team continues to look much improved this season.

The Board of Visitors Finance Committee voted to approve a new motion to require Board approval on all Strategic Investment Fund grants — which provide funding for 2030 Plan projects and initiatives — at their Friday meeting. The Committee also voted to increase dining and on-Grounds housing rates, as well as tuition for some of the University’s masters and graduate-level programs.

The Full Board of Visitors met Friday to conclude the final meeting of the calendar year. The Board approved all 16 resolutions from committee meetings that had occurred prior to the convening of the Full Board, including increases in the tuition for most graduate schools, increases in student housing and increases in meal plan rates. Additionally, University President Jim Ryan announced a $20 million commitment from Board member John L. Nau III.

The Board of Visitors Building and Grounds Committee met Thursday to approve schematic designs of ongoing projects, including new second-year housing and a North Grounds Parking Garage on the Emmet-Ivy Corridor. They also reviewed designs for a new University Center for the Arts. Several Committee members expressed concern over the costs and benefits of these projects, and Bert Ellis, board member and class of 1975 alumnus, took a stand against high University spending by opposing every item on the agenda.

Virginia women’s basketball struggled once again in its third consecutive loss Thursday, this time against Auburn. After leaving the Discover Puerto Rico Shootout with tight losses against Washington State and Wyoming, the Cavaliers (6-4, 0-0 ACC) struggled against the Tigers (6-3, 0-0 SEC) in the SEC/ACC Challenge. Although Virginia brought the score within three points in the final minutes of the game, it was once again unable to pull off a last-minute win. The Cavaliers fell 57-66 to Auburn for its first home loss of the season at John Paul Jones Arena.

The Board of Visitors’ Academic and Student Life Committee approved two new Bachelor of Science in Education programs in the School of Education and Human Development during its Thursday meeting. Other discussion items included updates from the Honor and Judiciary Committees, as well as current progress and new plans for the undergraduate Data Science major. The Committee also heard about the progress of U.Va. Innovates, a pan-university entrepreneurship initiative designed to foster and support the entrepreneurship community at the University.

Sunday evening, Virginia volleyball gathered to watch the NCAA selection show, which announced the 64 teams selected to compete in the NCAA Division I women’s volleyball tournament. The Cavaliers, who went 21-10 in the regular season and a respectable 11-9 in the ACC, were on the cusp of their first postseason appearance since 1999.

The Honor Committee transitioned to a multi-sanction system in July 2023, marking a historic shift from the single-sanction model that had governed the University’s honor system since 1842. The new approach replaced the automatic single-sanction — a two semester leave of absence at the time — with a range of sanctions tailored to the specifics of each case, offering options from rehabilitative measures like educational seminars to more punitive actions such as suspension and expulsion.

As the sun sets earlier and earlier, you might be tempted to grieve the lost hours of sunshine. Unlike the first half of the semester, walking to class now means bundling up in a mulitlayered, marshmallow-like outfit, and attending an evening discussion means walking home in seemingly the dead of night. But despite the wind chills and shorter days, there are actually reasons to celebrate this time of year.

Coach Tony Elliott turned to graduate quarterback Tony Muskett with the hopes that he would deliver a spark for the reeling Cavaliers against archnemesis Virginia Tech. Instead, Elliott’s squad flamed out. With the loss, Virginia (5-7, 3-5 ACC) came up just a game short of bowl eligibility, while the Hokies (6-6, 4-4 ACC) eke out a postseason bid for a second straight season.

In its last match of the regular season, Virginia volleyball faced off against Boston College at Memorial Gymnasium. This Saturday match was the second battle between these ACC foes — the first of which was a win Oct. 27 — and also the second time the match went to five sets. In this rematch, the Cavaliers (21-10, 11-10 ACC) lost to the Eagles (15-7, 8-12 ACC) in five sets, particularly struggling in the third and fifth sets.

For Virginia women’s basketball, it was the same old story once again. Missed shot after missed shot resulted in an abominable team shooting percentage of 39 percent. After falling to Washington State Friday, another awful performance on offense doomed the Cavaliers (6-3, 0-0 ACC) Saturday. This time, Virginia lost to Wyoming to finish 1-2 in the Discover Puerto Rico Shootout in San Juan, Puerto Rico. With the Cavaliers struggling to score, the Cowgirls (4-4, 0-0 MWC) claimed a 71-66 win.
