A sunny Saturday morning at Panorama Farms brought Virginia cross country out for the Panorama Invitational, which marked the Cavaliers’ final regular season meet before the ACC Cross Country Championships next month. On their home turf, the Cavaliers battled several in-conference and out-of-conference opponents, finding success as the women’s team picked up first place and the men finished second.

In Coach Tony Elliott’s first homecoming to his alma mater as a head coach, the Cavaliers failed to bring home a signature victory. No. 10 Clemson dominated the field all day, smothering Virginia (4-3, 2-2 ACC) by punishing its offensive line and humiliating its defense to hand a 48-31 defeat to the Cavaliers. The stout interior defensive line of the Tigers (6-1, 5-0 ACC) plugged rushing lanes and swallowed up Virginia's running backs for short gains. Pass protection did not go much better for the Cavalier men up front, as sophomore quarterback Anthony Colandrea faced constant pressure and was sacked four times. Both offensively and defensively, it was an afternoon to forget. Scoring 10 points in the first three quarters will seldom be enough to win a football game — and allowing 48 points is a surefire way to lose one.

The Virginia Legislature has been working day and night to replicate Californian environmental laws to reduce vehicle emissions in a vain attempt at curbing global warming. Despite this, Governor Youngkin recently announced that Virginia will not continue to follow California’s high emission standards after this year, instead adopting the less strict federal mandate for the electric vehicle industry. Whether or not this abandonment is possible is still up for legal debate, but the reasoning is not. Basing policy off of purely environmental concerns ignores reality and disregards economically sustainable solutions.

After having split results on the road, Virginia volleyball returned to Memorial Gymnasium in Charlottesville Friday to face one of its biggest conference rivals — Duke. The Cavaliers (15-3, 5-2 ACC) were not fazed by their most recent loss on the road against No. 20 Georgia Tech and swept the Blue Devils (7-11, 3-4 ACC) in three straight sets — winning 3-0.

Virginia rowing began its fall campaign Sunday in Boston, Mass., at the world's largest regatta — the Head of the Charles. The Cavaliers placed third in the Women’s Championship Four event and eighth in the Women’s Championship Eight competition, both a one-place improvement from last year’s efforts.

In the blink of an eye, Virginia men’s basketball faces a seemingly impossible task — replacing Tony Bennett. It is a daunting job, but Bennett, who announced his retirement last week, leaves the team in the trusted hands of Ron Sanchez, previously the associate head coach and now Bennett’s interim replacement. Sanchez has previous Division I head coaching experience and a good track record of recruiting, tools that will help as he replaces a coach who is the furthest thing from replaceable.

The goal seemed so simple. The ball pinged from one player to a second to a third, short and crisp one-touch passes, and then to a fourth.

Multiple times in college, I’ve found myself on a blind date — an arrangement where I go out with someone, despite never having met them. These dates are usually organized by a mutual friend, who sees date functions or other University social events as the perfect opportunity for match-making. While these dates can turn out to be fun, they can start out awkwardly when neither person knows what to say. For anyone being set up on a blind date at the University, here are 10 questions to kickstart a conversation and make you and your date feel a little less like strangers.

Virginia men's tennis concluded a successful few days at the ITA Atlantic Regional, a standalone indoor tournament held at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. that ran from Thursday to Monday. Players from various schools competed in singles and doubles draws, including James Madison, Virginia Tech and Navy — with the Cavaliers being the highest ranked team among them due to a successful spring season. The event provided a platform for qualification in the 2024 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in November, allowing for many hard-fought matches across the five days of competition.

Every time I walk on Grounds, I see another leaf turned golden orange, and I feel another crisp breeze in the air. Each sign of fall is another reason for me to whip out an apron and try my hand at some of my mother’s seasonal recipes.

Virginia football could easily be 6-0 right now. In fact, it would be, had the Cavaliers not suffered from self-inflicted wounds in the fourth quarter of two frustrating losses. Their 4-2 record is nothing to scoff at though, especially considering how the past two seasons have gone — but a troublesome trend is brewing. This team cannot seem to score inside the opponent’s 20-yard line, commonly referred to as the “red zone.” Virginia ranks 129th out of 134 teams in that category. Uncreative designs, poorly executed plays and a lack of clutch ability on offense are at the heart of a red zone scoring drought. And if the Cavaliers cannot fix the red zone issue, they will not be playing postseason football.

In its first ever in-conference matchup with Southern Methodist, Virginia women’s soccer got a much needed three points Sunday by scoring two goals and earning an ACC win at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers (10-4-0, 3-4-0 ACC) went down early but found their offensive identity in the second half to take down the Mustangs (6-7-2, 2-4-2 ACC) by a slim 2-1 margin.

A surprise greeted fans at Saturday’s Pepsi Blue-White Scrimmage — a quadrant of the John Paul Jones Arena concourse looked different, remodeled unobtrusively over the offseason, without announcement or fanfare. Virginia football pulled off an incredible comeback win over Boston College Saturday. The Cavaliers (4-1, 2-0 ACC) overcame a slow start that saw their offense gain just 16 yards in the first quarter, and put together a thrilling victory. The Eagles (4-2, 1-1 ACC) were a formidable opponent for much of the game, and led until the final quarter. In the game’s waning minutes, clutch turnovers on defense and an offensive spark won the Homecoming game for the Virginia faithful.

Xavier Brown pumped the football wildly as he raced down the sideline at Coastal Carolina, putting Chanticleer defenders in the rearview. His 75-yard dash in the third quarter was the longest Cavalier run since 2018 and set up the fourth of Virginia’s five touchdown drives in its punctuating 43-24 win Sept. 21.
