Just two days after eking out a 2-1 victory against No. 13 West Virginia, the No. 10 Virginia women's soccer team demonstrated its scoring prowess with a commanding 6-0 triumph against Richmond Sunday evening. A total of five players scored goals on the night, and eight Cavaliers (2-0) registered a point.

I am a Carolina Panthers fan. Now before you laugh at me or make a Jimmy Clausen joke, I just want to remind you that the Panthers played in the Super Bowl a mere seven years ago. If it weren't for Adam Vinatieri's dagger of a field goal with four seconds left in the game, the "Cardiac Cats" would have been Super Bowl Champions. But after a 2-14 2010 season, during which the Panthers seemingly found new ways to lose each week, the glory days of 2003 feel far, far away. The one positive from last year's debacle of a season is that the Panthers "earned" the first overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. Although I'm sure most of you are sick of listening to Mel Kiper, Jr. and Todd McShay drone on about the NFL Draft, allow me to explain why the Panthers need to take a quarterback with the first pick for this year's draft.

Despite a second straight hat trick by junior midfielder Colin Briggs, the No. 7 Virginia men's lacrosse team lost its second ACC game of the season against No. 10 Duke, 13-11, in Durham, N.C. Saturday.

The Virginia men's lacrosse team has lost 17 games since 2004; nine of those losses have come against Duke. In fact, the Cavaliers have dropped nine of their last 10 matchups against the Blue Devils, including a 14-13 defeat during last year's NCAA semifinal game. This weekend, the No. 7 Virginia team travels to Durham, N.C., looking to reverse that recent trend.

In an attempt to relieve the college basketball overload that swamps most sports fans this time of year, I'm going to talk about something else - and don't worry, I'll avoid the tired topics of Barry Bonds, Jim Tressel and the NFL draft as well. With the Final Four finished and spring games occurring around the country, college football is on my mind. ESPN has fed my craving by broadcasting the spring games of 12 different college football powerhouses this year. You probably can guess which schools they feature - Auburn, Oregon, Stanford, Virginia, LSU, Alabama.

Although one more weekend of March Madness still remains, Jimmer-mania finally has come to a halt. As I watched Jimmer Fredette's final game in a college uniform, I was awed - not by the 32 points that he scored, but rather by the 29 shots that he took and from where he took them. I admittedly have watched Fredette play only five or six times this year - despite ESPN's efforts to create Jimmer hysteria, the Brigham Young star is rarely seen on the East Coast - but I've distinguished the following trends in the way he plays: wild shots, poor defense and a lack of teamwork. Although Fredette may lead the voting for National Player of the Year, his reckless play has left his Cougars at home watching the Final Four.

Steve Fisher. The name sounds familiar, doesn't it? It's one of those names that you know - but you just can't remember who it is. Go ahead, Google it. You'll probably find the pages of Steve Fisher, the white water rafter; Steve Fisher, the Texas folk singer; or Steve Fisher, the candidate for Congress; but not the Steve Fisher that I'm talking about. Let me give you a couple more hints: Fab Five, San Diego State, Ed Martin. Okay, fine, I'll tell you. Steve Fisher is the current head basketball coach of the San Diego State Aztecs and former head basketball coach of the Michigan Wolverines, most notably during the era of the Fab Five. But for those of you who were born in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Steve Fisher's name may be unfamiliar. So how can a basketball coach with 412 career wins and a national title remain relatively unknown to the public? Maybe it's because of the overshadowing personalities of the players he recruits - think Jalen Rose, Chris Webber and Juwan Howard - or his laid-back coaching style. Known or unknown, Steve Fisher's road to redemption constitutes one of the best stories in college basketball.

March Madness is here - no, I'm not talking about Charlie Sheen - and like many other sports fans, I'm eager for the world's greatest sports tournament to begin. This year is different from others, with the selection committee adding three more teams to the tournament field to play in the highly controversial "First Four." Although this doesn't mean that the tournament itself will be greatly affected, it does mean that we won't have to hear Digger Phelps and Jay Bilas argue about tournament expansion for at least one more year. Another huge change is that every single game will be broadcast on TV between four networks - CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV - ending an era of CBS dominance of television rights for the Big Dance and beginning a new era of anti-productivity in the American workplace for the first few weeks of March.

Despite growing up playing basketball and being a college basketball enthusiast, I am not a fan of the NBA. Sure, the NBA Playoffs are great to watch, and Blake Griffin's dunks almost make it worth watching a whole Clippers game, but for the most part, I don't like the NBA. There are many reasons for my disenchantment with the NBA. The first is that the team I grew up rooting for, the Charlotte Hornets, were ruthlessly ripped out of my hands and given to the city of New Orleans, only to be replaced by a disgrace of an NBA team that I begrudgingly have nicknamed the Charlotte "Bobkitties." As you can tell, I'm still a little bitter.

While most college basketball conferences are being run by a few powerhouses - Duke in the ACC, Texas in the Big 12, Ohio State in the Big Ten - there is one conference where parity abounds: the Big East. There are 11 teams within five games of first place in the conference, and it seems that there's a monstrous upset in the Big East every week. Now that most college basketball fans have passed the title of "Best College Basketball Conference" from the ACC to the Big East, I wonder - what is behind the mystique of the Big East?

As the final seconds of last year's ACC Tournament game between Virginia and Duke ticked away, I was jubilant, delighted and - dare I say - ecstatic. It wasn't because my beloved Wahoos had only lost to the No. 1-seeded Blue Devils by 11 points, nor was it because the roller-coaster ride of a season had finally come to a halt. It was because I saw potential. I saw a top-25 team with budding ACC players of the year. I saw All-Americans and first-round NBA draft picks. But most importantly, I saw a team that could win.
