Charlottesville City voters elected two new members to City Council last night, giving seats to Kathleen Galvin and Dede Smith, both Democrats. Incumbent Satyendra Huja, also a Democrat, maintained his seat on Council. Of the seven total candidates, no Republicans competed in the race. The announced results were unofficial as of last night.

At the first Student Council meeting of the school year last night, members unanimously passed a resolution to commemorate those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 attacks and honor the people who responded to the crisis. Coinciding with the passage of this legislation, the Community Affairs Committee announced its joint plans with other student organizations to express appreciation for Charlottesville public servants on the 10-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

Both Student Council and the Faculty Senate endorsed the Presidential Committee on Sustainability's Carbon Reduction Plan last week, which aims to reduce the University's greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent by 2025. The plan will be presented to the Board of Visitors in June for a final verdict.

At last night's meeting, Student Council announced its plans for a Speak Up UVA Day to be held in the Amphitheater this fall. During the event, students will have the opportunity to meet with Council representatives to offer ideas and input about initiatives they would like to see Council enact.

The Board of Visitors approved an 8.9 percent tuition increase for all undergraduate students, as well as varying tuition increases for different graduate programs yesterday. These tuition raises come in the wake of the $15 million cut in state funding for the University.

Student Council unanimously passed a bill yesterday endorsing the protection of the University's transgender community and participation in a day of silence to combat transphobia. The day of silence will take place April 7 and culminate in a gathering at 7 p.m. in Clark Hall, Room 107.
