The Buildings and Grounds Committee of the Board of Visitors met Thursday to present the updated Major Capital Plan — the University budget allocating funds to new construction projects. The committee also heard the 2030 Grounds Framework Plan, a series of initiatives aimed at improving facilities and increasing connectivity across the University.

St. Anthony Hall, Kappa Sigma, Zeta Psi, Delta Kappa Epsilon and Chi Phi fraternities have been found guilty and sanctioned by the University Judiciary Committee for various violations of the University’s 12 Standards of Conduct, per UJC’s Spring 2022 report. The business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi was also found guilty of two counts of hazing.

The University Judiciary Committee met Sunday to introduce newly-elected Executive Committee members for its 2022-2023 term, which began April 1. UJC is a student-run organization responsible for investigating and trying alleged violations of the University's Standards of Conduct, which lists 12 prohibited behaviors aimed at facilitating a community of safety and trust.

Fourth-year College student Sarita Mehta is entering into the final months of her tenure as student member of the Board of Visitors after entering the role in June 2021. While on the Board, Mehta has worked to connect as many students as possible with the Board and University administration in order to give them a voice in a body she feels many students feel disconnected from.

Following the cancellation of a traditional week-long spring break last year, Alternative Spring Break program was able to take its talents across the country again in early March to engage in service trips benefiting communities outside of Charlottesville. Students traveled to sites such as Arches National Park, Sequoia National Park and New Orleans to complete projects focused on environmental restoration and housing needs.

This year’s race for president of Fourth Year Trustees is contested between two candidates, third-year College student Anisa Mohamed and third-year Commerce student Sophia Liao — Liao is the current president of Third Year Council and is running on a ticket alongside Lara Arif, third-year Batten student and current vice president of Third Year Council.

Two Law student groups hosted a conversation on reproductive rights Friday in response to a Feb. 9 program surrounding abortion planned by the Federalist Society. The Federalist Society’s event — titled “Does Women’s Equality Require Abortion?” — featured legal scholar Erika Bachiochi. The event drew criticism from Law students for being misleading, as well as transphobic comments previously made by Bachiochi.

Student Council held a town hall virtually this Thursday to provide a space for students, faculty and community members to share reactions and — for some — complaints to the University’s public health guidelines and plans for the spring semester. More than 30 individuals attended the event and participants voiced opinions on a number of issues, from a lack of academic accommodations to inadequate support for resident advisors.

City Council approved Michael Rogers to act as interim city manager in a Jan. 18 meeting after a long struggle to appoint and retain a manager. After discussing a new grant and local public spaces, the Council went into closed session to meet with legal personnel regarding ongoing lawsuits.

DivestUVA gathered on the front steps of the Rotunda Saturday to protest the University’s refusal to provide a transparent report of University funds going towards fossil fuel industries. DivestUVA organized the rally as the December 1 deadline requested in an online petition by the organization eclipsed.

Students will now retain access to University-created Google Drive accounts until graduation, per an email update sent Thursday from Abel Liu, president of Student Council and fourth-year College student. The change comes after vocal student opposition and lobbying efforts by Student Council on behalf of students opposing the University's decision to transition all students to Office 365 at the end of the 2021-22 school year.

In an effort to increase student participation in the upcoming Nov. 2 general election, Student Council has offered to reimburse up to 200 students for their Uber or Lyft transportation costs to early voting sites.
