On Friday, the Virginia women’s lacrosse team beat Southern California in the opening game of the NCAA tournament by a score of 13-11. The future of the program was on full display in Chapel Hill, N.C., with freshman midfielder Rachel Clark and freshman attacker Kate Miller combining for seven points and propelling the Cavaliers (10-9, 3-5 ACC) to the second round. The win marks the fifth time in a row that the Cavaliers have made it to at least the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The last time they lost in the first round was in 2016 against Johns Hopkins. For the Trojans (13-5, 8-2 PAC-12), the loss punctuates a challenging end to the season after a defeat in the PAC-12 semifinal against Arizona State.

Virginia women’s lacrosse team will face off against Southern California Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. This marks the 26th consecutive year that the Cavaliers (9-9, 3-5 ACC) will advance to the postseason. Coach Julie Myers also continued her streak of making the postseason as a head coach, dating back to the beginning of the current streak for the Cavaliers.

Athletic Director Carla Williams announced Monday that Amaka “Mox” Agugua-Hamilton will be the next women’s basketball coach. This news comes recently after the termination of former coach Tina Thompson, who struggled to find success in her tenure, going 30-63 in her four years at Virginia.

With a loss against No. 16 Notre Dame last Sunday, No. 13 women’s lacrosse was unable to prolong the momentum following their Feb. 27 rout of Stanford. In the early going of the 2022 season, the Cavaliers have been up and down in terms of collecting wins and losses.

Virginia women’s basketball lost to Wake Forest 68-53 Sunday afternoon. The Cavaliers (3-19, 0-13 ACC) struggled early on, but found their footing and came back to take the lead in the third quarter. However, Virginia could not maintain their success for the full game, with the Demon Deacons (13-12, 3-11 ACC) winning the fourth quarter 20-8.

In a continuation of a frustrating season for the Virginia women’s basketball team, the Cavaliers (3-13, 0-6 ACC) dropped all three ACC matchups last week to Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Duke. Although it showed glimpses of promise at times, Virginia simply could not overcome the challenges that go along with capturing the team’s first conference win of the season.

The Virginia women’s basketball team traveled across state lines Dec. 19 to take on No. 2 NC State in its ACC opener. Graduate guard Amandine Toi was the star for the Cavaliers (3-8, 0-1 ACC), leading the scoresheet with 20 points, shooting a stellar 57.1 percent from the field. The Wolfpack (11-2, 2-0), one of the best squads in the country and the conference favorite, had help from all over with 11 players scoring and three scoring in double-digits.

This past week, Virginia hosted the Cavalier Classic at John Paul Jones Arena and a home clash against William & Mary, falling to Rhode Island and Richmond at the Cavalier Classic over the weekend and downing the Tribe Thursday. While the Cavaliers (2-6, 0-0 ACC) have shown flashes of improvement, they have still been unable to piece together a complete game as ACC play approaches.

On Sunday, the Virginia women's basketball team lost to Pac-12 foe, Southern California, in its first home game of the season. This loss to the Trojans (2-0, 0-0 Pac-12) comes as the Cavaliers’ (0-2, 0-0 ACC) second straight loss to begin their 2021-2022 campaign after falling to James Madison 84-69 last Tuesday in Harrisonburg.

On Saturday at 7:30 p.m., the Virginia wrestling team will travel to Washington, D.C. to face American in their first dual meet of the season. Both teams are coming off shortened seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic and are looking to start their seasons off on a high note in the out-of-conference showdown.

The Virginia men’s golf team finished in a three-way tie for first place at the Hamptons Intercollegiate at Maidstone Golf Club in East Hampton, N.Y. The Cavaliers finished with a combined team score of 4-under to tie with Georgia Tech and Northwestern.
