Mitchell drives golf to second-place finish

In the Cleveland Collegiate Challenge, the men's golf team finished in second place, five shots ahead of Virginia Tech and seven shots behind Augusta State. Mike Mitchell led the Cavaliers with a three round 71-67-69, and was the tournament champion. James Driscoll was the only other Cav in the top 10. Virginia rallied with a team score of 276 in the second round after a first round score of 294 put them far back in the field. With a score of 292 in the third round the Cavs secured a second-place finish.

Women rowers victorious

The women's rowing team, ranked second in the nation by the USRowing and the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association, started its spring season off by winning two races over San Diego State Saturday. In the first varsity eight competition, Virginia defeated the Aztecs by over 17 seconds, while the second varsity eight was victorious by just under 10 seconds. The Cavaliers, who finished second in the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships last year, compete again on March 25 against Michigan and Ohio State.

Welsh reshuffles staff

Football Coach George Welsh continued changing his coaching staff Monday by naming Art Markos and David Turner as new special teams co-coordinators.

Both Markos and Turner have had multiple jobs in the Virginia coaching staff during their tenures. Markos, an original member of Welsh's staff in 1982, has coached exclusively on the defensive side of the ball, primarily with the secondary. Turner just completed his third season on the Cav staff and will double his special teams duties with his position as defensive tackles coach.

Throwers nab new asst. coach

The track and field team recently hired Jason Twedt as an assistant coach. Twedt has a distinguished background as an individual competitor and a coach. He was a WAC javelin champion and then trained with several world throwing champions in Europe while competing in the World Military Games. At the University of California at San Diego, Twedt coached three NCAA All-Americans in various throwing events, including discus, hammer and shot put. In a press release, Coach Randy Bungard called Twedt a great fit for the Virginia program.

Rain ruins baseball's day

The Virginia baseball team's game yesterday against the Rams of Virginia Commonwealth was cancelled due to the rainy weather.
