Student Council looks into adding new business minor

Student Council members are looking into instating a business minor offered to students outside of the McIntire School of Commerce.

The proposed business minor would be an alternative for students who believe they do not have time to commit to the Commerce School application process or its complete course load.

Although the idea still is in the beginning stages, Student Council passed a resolution last semester supporting the proposal submitted by third-year College student Boots Dunlap.

"Until there is a viable proposal on the table regarding this issue, we are taking a lot of time to investigate," said Abby Fifer, Council chief of staff.

If implemented, the minor could be offered by the College or the Commerce School.

Second-year College student Sandy McArthur said he advertised the proposal through the U.Va. Connections e-mail and received over 200 positive responses in regards to the idea.

"It's ridiculous that the University is sending such a large number of graduates out into the working world without any formal business training," McArthur said.

There already are a number of courses being offered to students outside of the Commerce School in subjects such as marketing and personal finance, as well as numerous fourth-year electives, Commerce School Dean Carl Zeithaml said.

"We simply don't have the resources to launch a business minor," Zeithaml said.

"I think one of the Commerce School's strengths is the fact that all of its resources are focused completely on those students that chose to devote their studies solely to commerce," second-year College student Lindsay Buchanan said.

But fourth-year Commerce student Martin Montana said he thought the minor would be a good idea.

"For those students, the business minor would provide an opportunity to take a more diverse selection of classes, not just the limited number of courses that are currently being offered to non-Comm. students," Montana said.
