Council, Student Affairs create online student event calendar

The days of relying on Connections e-mails for University event information may be nearing an end. Student organizations soon will have a new way to advertise programs when the online Student Event Calendar is launched.

Although the new Web site now is available online in its test phase (http:/codd.itc.virginia.edu/studentcal), calendar creators hope to go University-wide sometime next week, Vice President for Organization Kelly Harris said.

The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, Student Council, University Relations and Information Technology and Communications worked in cooperation to provide a calendar specifically geared to aid student organizations.

The new Web site will "change the way student organizations do advertising," Student Council President Joe Bilby said.

Creators felt the existing University calendar on the main Web site did not meet student needs because it was difficult for student groups to post information, Council Chief Technology Officer Ben Hallen said.

The current University event calendar is "intended for all aspects of the University - people who may not be interested in sorority fundraisers or acapella concerts," Hallen said.

"The goal is to facilitate communication from students to students," said Lori Willy, assistant to the vice president for student affairs. The Student Event Calendar "has great potential to serve as a location for student events at the University."

Registered group account users will be able to post information on social events, fundraisers, speakers and meetings.

Since organization spokespersons can post information themselves and will not have to go through a third party, University students will have access to immediate event updates, Willy said.

"With that turnaround, we hope student groups will be more likely to post their information," Hallen said.

The event calendar hopefully will eliminate the need for weekly Connections e-mail updates because the Web site will allow easier accessibility and a more condensed format than connections currently offers, Harris said.

Because all parties involved donated their time to the project and ITC has included the calendar as part of its regular project, Willy said she anticipates that funding for the project will not be a problem.

The Web site will be supported by the office of the vice president for student affairs.

"Cost will be minimal because we just modified the existing calendar," Willy said.
