Honor elects Hall for second term as chair

At a special Honor Committee retreat over the weekend, the Committee-elect selected its seven executive officers. Current Committee Chairman Thomas Hall won reelection to a second term as head of the honor system, making him the first chairman to serve two terms.

Hall, a third-year College Rep., ran uncontested for the high office.

"I think people recognize the value of continuity and the value of experience, particularly in such a difficult position," Hall said. "Last year a good tone was set in terms of getting things done."

"Around the University once you do something for two years, it becomes a tradition," Hall said. He said he hoped to make effective case processing, diversity awareness and extensive training traditions of the honor system.

The new Committee and its executive officers take office April 2.

Third-year Engineering Rep. Chris Scott won the position of vice chairman for trials, the office responsible for scheduling cases and overseeing counsel.

Scott said one of his priorities will be looking at ways to implement the referendum passed by the student body which calls for a change in the role of honor counsel.

"I got the impression that [the current Committee] didn't think they could do much with it," because three of the four referenda failed, Scott said. "Now [the change] doesn't fit into the model they foresaw ... but I believe we have to do something," he said.

Scott said he would focus on changing the potentially confrontational role of counsel and will work to recruit a more diverse counsel pool.

Third-year Commerce Rep. Cara Coolbaugh will serve as vice chairman for investigations, the office responsible for overseeing cases from initiation through the investigative panel stage.

"The Committee leaving office now did a good job of making things run smoothly," Coolbaugh said, adding that she hoped the new executive committee could continue to function efficiently.

All the other executive office races were uncontested.

"I think the right people found the right jobs," Hall said of the relatively high number of uncontested races.

Education Rep. Katie Gillespie will serve as the new vice chairwoman for education. Law Rep. Scott Strobridge will serve as the new vice chairman for services.

Architecture Rep. Brian Winterhalter will serve as chairman of the Faculty Advisory Committee, and College Rep. Brian Smith will serve as chairman of the Diversity Advisory Board.

"I think this executive committee is an excellent group, and I'm particularly pleased about the broad representation of schools," Hall said.
