University appoints new vice president for finance

After an eight-month search, University officials think they have found the woman for the job.

Yoke San L. Reynolds will start in late May as University vice president for finance, a new position.

She is now the vice president for financial affairs and university controller at Cornell University.

"It's a great opportunity for me to come to Virginia," Reynolds said. "It's going to be a challenge for me. I'm sure everything's going to have a Virginian twist down there."

She will head the University's primary financial operations and oversee departments such as Human Resources, Financial Administration, Business Operations, Business Analysis and Risk Management, tasks previously performed by Leonard W. Sandridge, executive vice president and chief operating officer. She will report to Sandridge.

Reynolds said she was eager about some of the changes the University faces.

"U.Va.'s currently in the process of moving to the next stage of financial planning," she said. "It's going to be an exciting time to be there."

"This position is a key part of the president's and Board of Visitors' restructuring plan that began over a year ago," Sandridge said. "Ms. Reynolds will assume responsibility for several financial and business roles that previously have rested directly with me."

Sandridge spoke highly of Reynolds' personal qualities and noted they were the reason why the committee chaired by Sandridge and University President John T. Casteen III chose her for the position.

"She exhibits personal characteristics of integrity and commitment to fairness in all aspects of her professional life that cause us to believe she will be very successful and effective at the University," he said. "She is known for her commitment to staff and colleagues."

Reynolds admitted she would be in somewhat unfamiliar territory, but she said her experiences at Cornell would help her through.

"Every university is unique," she said. "But I do have many of the same departments here at Cornell, so I'll have a grasp of what's going on."

Reynolds will be given time to adapt to the University, and she ultimately will lead efforts to improve the financial, business and research support services provided to students and faculty, Sandridge said.
