Police nab man for Sigma Nu incident

University police arrested a Charlottesville man suspected of assaulting a party guest outside the Sigma Nu fraternity house early Tuesday morning.

Police charged 21-year-old Bryan Pierre Slaughter of 114 Hartman Mill Rd. yesterday afternoon with felonious assault. Slaughter is not a University student.

Investigators still are looking into reports that another party guest fired several gunshots in the air from a car after the assault.

Based on investigation leads and eyewitness statements, police believe Slaughter was one of several individuals who attacked Colonel Jose Martin outside the fraternity house on Carr's Hill Road, University Police Sgt. Melissa Fielding said.

Martin, not a University student, was treated and released from the University Medical Center on Tuesday.

Martin and Slaughter both attended a private party sponsored by Black Caesar, a student organization that promotes concerts, parties and other entertainment events. However, neither man was associated with the group, Black Caesar member Bokar Ture said. "The men had absolutely no affiliation with Black Caesar," Ture said.

Black Caesar hired security as a precaution to oversee the safety of its party guests.

"Everyone was thoroughly checked for weapons. We had organized security and everything necessary to ensure the safety of the party," Ture said. "As a result, not one student was seriously injured, the fight was taken outside a couple seconds after it started, all students were taken care of."

While many Greek houses rent their houses to outside organizations for special events, groups are expected to adhere to the same rules as fraternities do for their own parties.

"Groups renting our house must abide by all University regulations, [Inter-Fraternity and Inter-Sorority Council] policies, and local, state and federal laws," Sigma Nu house manager Justin Gavin said.

There is also supervision provided by fraternity members in the house to assure the lessee abides by the terms of the contract, he said.

"We've had minor problems in the past and are more selective this year with who we rent to," he added.
