Alumni Web site lists four deaths

Because a large amount of University alumni work in the New York and Washington areas, the Alumni Association recently posted a list on its Web site of four University graduates who died as a result of the recent terrorist attacks. The site allows alumni to report their status after the Sept. 11 attacks.

The Alumni Association's compiled the Web site at www.alumni.virginia.edu through information and obituaries submitted by alumni and their relatives. A message board accompanies the list, where other information concerning the attacks can be posted by alumni and friends.

The Alumni Association was careful to avoid posting names prematurely because of the problems misinformation could have caused, said D.J. Crotteau, director of communications for the Alumni Association.

"This list is useful and appropriate for classmates and friends" of the deceased, University spokeswoman Louise Dudley said.

The Web site reports that four University graduates were killed in the attacks: Patrick Sean Murphy (ENGR '87); Michael J. Cahill (CLAS '86); Douglas D. Ketcham (CLAS '96); and Glenn D. Kirwin (CLAS '82).

A memorial for Murphy, who was vice president of information and technology for the Marsh and McLennan firm in New York, is planned for tomorrow in Short Hills, N.J.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to a charitable foundation recently established by Marsh and McLennan.

Funeral services for Cahill are to be held Oct. 1 at St. Aidan Church in Williston Park, N.Y.

Ketcham's family held a memorial service in his honor Sept. 23 in Richmond.

A memorial scholarship has been established in his name at Midlothian High School near Richmond.

Services for Kirwin were held Sept. 17 in New York. More than 800 people attended.

The Web site also reported that Karen Elizabeth Hagerty, daughter of J. Linzee (CLAS '65) and Lena Whittaker, died in the tragedy.

Other colleges and universities around the country have made efforts to contact alumni in light of the recent event. Columbia University, Virginia Tech, Duke University and Harvard University have online contact information and message boards.
