Madison House has yet another helping hand at work.
The student volunteer organization recently appointed Mark Andrews as the new associate director of its programs.
Andrews is committed to students, believes in the principle of student self-governance at the University, has a perspective on community and has experience with leadership development, Madison House Executive Director Cindy Frederick said.
His responsibilities include leadership development, advising eight programs and 140 program directors and working in conjunction with the rest of the programs. He personally advises eight different programs: Adopt-a-Grandparent, Big Siblings, Day Care, H.E.L.P. Line, Hoos Against Hunger and Homelessness, Hoos Out There, Medical Services and Migrant Aid.
Andrews's goals include improving leadership for the student program directors in Madison House and further creating a number of new initiatives for pilot projects this year.
Andrews said he is having a great time in Madison House and enjoys working with the students and the staff team.
"I am continually impressed with what students are doing in the community," Andrews said.
The selection panel for the position consisted of Frederick and five students from Madison House, which reviewed 90 applicants. Two rounds of interviews narrowed the number of candidates down from 90 to 15, and finally to just one.
Becky Kinlein, a student on the panel, said she was impressed with Andrews' 20 years of experience in the Charlottesville community, and believes that "he can only be an asset" to the program.
Frederick said she believes Andrews will "help take the leadership program to the next level"
