Student Council has postponed this week's elections because of a technical problem with the online voting system.
According to President Abby Fifer, Council recently changed to a new online server. After the change the program that identifies voters by their social security numbers was not transfered to the new server.
Without this program, nothing would prevent students from voting multiple times in the election. A new date has not been set for the election, which will fill three College vacancies.
Gilmore announces statewide ban on burning
Virginia Gov. James S. Gilmore III has announced a statewide ban on burning in open spaces.
The move was prompted by a drought that has made much of the state susceptible to forest fires. The ban will continue indefinitely until weather conditions improve.
"All state and local law enforcement officials are responsible" for implementing the rule, Gilmore spokesman Reed Boatright said.
Boatright added that no special steps are being taken to enforce the burning ban, and that the likely punishment for a first offense violation of the new rule would be a fine.
Gilmore also activated the Virginia National Guard to help fight fires which already have started as a result of the dry, windy weather. A written statement by the governor noted that fallen leaves have contributed to the likeliness of fires.
Virginia law gives the governor the authority to prohibit burning when conditions present a danger to public safety. The last time the governor used this power was in the fall of 1998.
