University Women's Health Center recognizes neonatal specialist
Hurt, a neonatologist and 1971 University Medical School graduate has been researching the long-term effects of premature infants who are exposed to cocaine in the womb. Her study found that children born under these conditions normally do not suffer more than children born without exposure to cocaine.
Hurt received her undergraduate degree from Sweet Briar College in 1967 before beginning her studies at the University Medical Center. During her term at the University she became the first woman to be named chief resident of the pediatrics department.
Hurt will lecture during the Medical Center Hour on Oct. 10 in the Jordan Conference Center Auditorium. She later will be honored at a benefit dinner for the Women's Center Oct. 11.
The Women's Center established the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1991 to honor University female graduates.
