With the advent of spring rush activities the University's sorority system has found itself with a new little sister.
The Lambda Chapter of Sigma Psi Zeta Inc. entered the Multi Cultural Greek Coordinating Council before the last week of classes in December.
President Sophia Ni, a third year in the College, has been working to establish Sigma Psi Zeta since her first year at the University.
The process to become a sorority at the University took a year and a half. Until it received approval, Sigma Psi Zeta applied for CIO status through the University and were known as an interest group called Sisterhood of Young Asians (SoYA), Ni said.
During that time as an interest group, SoYA researched different chapters they were interested in bringing to the University. They found Sigma Psi Zeta.
SoYA members rushed Sigma Psi Zeta over the summer in New York City where the sorority is headquartered. Ni and her fellow sisters began pledging in the fall of 2001.
"There's a huge Asian population at the University and we're here to give girls an additional option," Ni said.
Ni emphasizes that the sorority is open to women of all backgrounds. Other national houses "have memberships from Chinese, Korean, Laotian, Taiwanese, Haitian, Italian, African and Thai women. As a whole, we are multicultural."
Sigma Psi Zeta will have information sessions today and tomorrow for those women who are interested in rushing.
