News in Brief

Gov. Mark R. Warner (D) called for a statewide tax referendum during his debut appearance yesterday on the call-in radio show "Ask the Governor."

Warner said during the show that he supported a statewide referendum rather than a regional one that only would benefit "the richest part of the state" to raise money for education.

Previous transportation bills have focused on Northern Virginia.

Del. James H. Dillard II (R-Fairfax) proposed the bill Warner supported, which aims to increase the sales tax by one half-cent statewide.

"The statewide approach still would be a challenge to get through the legislature, but has a much better chance," Warner said.

Warner also said during the broadcast that he had sent Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig a letter "reaffirming" the Commonwealth's interest in acquiring a franchise.

U.Va. to host multi-college conference for athletes

The University announced that it will host the 11th annual Athletic Prevention Programming and Leadership Education conference Feb. 1-3 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Charlottesville.

More than 200 student-athletes, trainers and coaches representing 50 colleges are expected to attend the APPLE conference, which was created in 1991 by the late Susan Grossman, founding director of the University Institute for Substance Abuse Studies, and Director of Sports Medicine Joe Gieck.

The conference teaches student-athletes how to implement peer-based prevention programs at their schools.
