The University of Wisconsin-Madison announced last Thursday it will give pay raises and retroactive pay to 42 female faculty members. The raises range from $1,000 to $14,500 per year.
While similar studies in 1995 and 1998 found no salary differences, a 1998 study prompted Provost Peter D. Spear to ask deans and faculty to nominate women whose salaries should be reviewed. One hundred seventeen total reviews have been conducted since fall 2000.
The decision to raise salaries was an effort to increase gender equality at the university. UW-Madison gave similar raises to 372 faculty members totaling $830,000 in 1992 after a study in staff salaries revealed a gender gap unrelated to worker merit or years of service.
Charlottesville groups create home for city's arts
Live Arts, Second Street Gallery and Light House are planning to turn Water and Second streets into a four-story home for live and studio arts. The 27,000-square-foot City Center for Contemporary Arts will include a first-floor art gallery, second- and third-floor theater spaces and rehearsal and office spaces on the fourth floor.
The new space will give the organizations a chance to expand current programs. Light House hopes to dedicate space to its teen film workshop. Second Street Gallery will enjoy a threefold increase in gallery space from its current home in McGuffey Art Center. The organization hopes to create window displays on the first floor for passers-by.
