Carl Gainsback, a George Mason University student, died Sunday evening at University Medical Center. The 19-year-old evidently suffered a fall that caused serious head injuries.

"We received a call at about 5:30 [a.m. Sunday morning] that this student was injured," City Spokesman Maurice Jones said. "The preliminary indications are that he suffered severe head trauma due to a fall."

According to a Charlottesville police report, Gainsback was visiting "either a U.Va. student or students."

"We're not sure how far he fell or where he fell from," Jones added.

Following his injury sustained in the 200 block of 14th Street NW, Gainsback was transported to University Medical Center where he died later Sunday evening.

The police are continuing to investigate the incident, and no charges have been filed.

FEST program awards University researchers $200,000 grant

University researchers now have the funding to investigate cell and gene interactions thanks to a $200,000 grant from the University's Funding Excellence in Science and Technology program.

The research group also will receive a $3.6 million grant from the National Institute of Health to further their efforts.

University President John T. Casteen III revealed the formation of the University's FEST program two years ago.

The research team is comprised of a diverse group of scientists.

Many of the scientific techniques utilized in the project were developed in University laboratories.
