Greek councils aim to reduce tension

Rumblings of fractured communication among the University's four Greek councils have given rise to a new joint committee promising open discourse and social cohesion.

Named the "Greek Collaborative Council," the board held an interest meeting two weeks ago, and will begin its official bi-weekly meetings Wednesday.

"This committee could serve as a vehicle through which we could educate each other about our respective Councils," said Ryan Ewalt, Inter-Fraternity Council public relations spokesman.

Ewalt stressed that this is a "collaborative committee and it will be run with that as the foremost principle."

The GCC will consist of representatives from the IFC, the Inter-Sorority Council, the Black Fraternal Council and the Multicultural Greek Council; specifically, the inter-Greek relations chairperson, the public relations spokesperson and the community service chairperson of each group.

Each council also has been requested to nominate and elect one non-council member to sit on the committee with the intention of exposing them to management positions.

"This committee has definitely sparked my interest concerning leadership roles," said William Terry, a second-year College student and GCC representative.

Terry said he feels the GCC is serving an important function by "tapping into a potential for improved relations."

ISC Public Relations Chairwoman Cahill Zoeller agreed that enhanced communication could yield many benefits.

"The GCC is an initiative designed to optimize communication among all Councils, not only as a means to more thoroughly represent each Council to others, but also to promote more co-sponsored events among the Councils," Zoeller said.

IFC Community Service Chairman Logan Nicholson said these events will include joint community service projects.

"We all want to accomplish the same thing," Nicholson said. "What better way than to all be on the same page?"

The GCC's inception is timely, given a heightened emphasis on cooperation by the fraternity system this spring.

Last week, "Comfort Zone" was held for all four councils, and the upcoming Derby Days and Greek Awards both will include the BFC and MGC for the first time. This is the only change made thus far to the fraternal infrastructure for the purpose of unification.
