Transportation board approves Jefferson Park Avenue bridge
The Commonwealth Transportation Board approved designs for a bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railway on Jefferson Park Avenue.
The Board made additional provisions for improvements to Fontaine Avenue.
The bridge, which will replace the current bridge that runs over the railroad tracks, will require that JPA be raised.
As a result, Todd Avenue no longer will intersect with JPA. Instead, the new bridge will include stairway access to Todd Avenue.
Improvements to Fontaine Avenue include a center turn lane. The new turn lane will require that the road be widened.
The improvements also include new bike lanes that will travel in both directions.
The projects combined will cost approximately $7.7 million and will begin by late 2004 at the earliest.
Sandridge meets with living wage proponents
Leonard W. Sandridge, University executive vice-president and chief operating officer, met Friday with supporters of a living wage campaign for workers contracted by the University.
The Virginia Organizing Project is campaigning for the University to hire only independent contractors who pay their workers a living wage.
The living wage is defined as a salary that can support a family of four above the poverty line.
Lawyers for both the University and the VOP attended the meeting, as did Charlottesville City Council member Maurice Cox.
