University works to reduce water usage by 10 percent

As the Commonwealth suffers through the driest six months in recorded history, the University is working with other institutions to reduce water use.

Current drought conditions, the worst in 70 years, prompted cuts that reduced University water use by 8 percent this fiscal year, but more are needed. The University, the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County aim to use 10 percent less water in the coming months.

University efforts include installing aerators on faucets to reduce water flow, new high-efficiency washing machines, water conserving toilets and drastically reducing outdoor watering. A quarter of all water at the University is used in cooling systems, though the majority of water is recycled in these systems.

On average, the University uses about 600 million gallons of water per fiscal year, which translates to 55 gallons per student or employee per day.

James Madison sophomore Clara Jane Schwartz, 19, will go before a grand jury on charges of first-degree murder following a ruling last Thursday. Schwartz allegedly conspired with Kyle Hulbert, 18, to kill her father Robert M. Schwartz, 57, a nationally renowned biophysicist.

Clara Schwartz's father was stabbed and slashed to death with a 27-inch sword in his Mt. Gilead home early last December.

Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Judge Avelina Jacob chose to send the case before a grand jury April 8.
