Greek-sponsored Habitat for Humanity House reaches completion
After six months of building during the fall and winter, a Habitat for Humanity home co-sponsored by the University Greek system and the Venable Neighborhood Association recently was completed.
The house, located on 10 1/2 Street, officially turned over to Charlottesville resident Shirley Early and her family in a dedication ceremony Saturday.
Fundraising for the project began two years ago, amounting to $20,000 donated by the Greek system. The total funding for the house, with other contributors, totaled $40,000.
"This is the first time that the Greek system has sponsored a house in recent years," Inter-Fraternity Council Service Chairman Logan Joseph Nicholson said.
Nicholson said he was pleased with the number of students who came to help work at the house.
"Every single weekend was packed with students," he said.
The Greek Councils, consisting of the IFC, Inter-Sorority Council, Black Fraternal Council and Multicultural Greek Council, raised money through mass mailings to Greek alumni.
The Greek system plans to fund another house in the future.
Women's Health festival finds new venue
Increasing numbers of participants in the annual Women's Health and Wellness festival prompted organizers to move the event to the Doubletree Hotel this year.
The festival, to be held April 13, will focus on health awareness for women, including such issues as coping with stress and anxiety in the wake of Sept. 11.
