News in brief

With blankets and sunglasses in tow, University students likely will flock Mad Bowl for this Saturday's Springfest, sponsored by the University Programs Council.

The festivities, scheduled to last from noon to 8 p.m., promise free music and food for all who attend.

Guster, Pat Green and the Virginia Coalition are slated to perform, beginning at 1 p.m. A second stage will also feature several musicians, including Bennie Dodd.

Other recreational activities include a karaoke recording booth, an inflatable climbing wall, caricature artists and a poetry reader. Students are invited to bring their own food and non-alcoholic drinks, but free Big Jim's Barbeque will be available to all.

"We're all incredibly excited about this," said Jen Habich, UPC special program chair.

Habich said no roads will be closed off for the event, although entry only will be possible from the Madison Lane side of the area. Police will be on hand to prohibit alcohol use and monitor crowd control.

Jbeau Lewis, program coordinator of PK German, said that come rain or shine, the event will be carried out.

In the case of intermittent showers, Springfest will remain at Mad Bowl. If heavy, ongoing rain is predicted, it will be moved to Newcomb Plaza.

Guests are welcome to attend, as Springfest is open to the public.
