House passes parental consent abortion bill
The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill yesterday that would make transporting a minor across state lines in order to avoid parental consent laws for abortions a federal crime.
The bill now will go to the Senate for approval.
Proponents of the bill said it was designed to prevent pregnant teens from skirting state abortion laws.
"Right now, a parent in Charlotte, N.C., must grant permission before the school nurse gives their child an aspirin, but the parent can't prevent a stranger from taking their child out of school and up to Maryland for an abortion," said Rep. Sue Myrick, R-N.C., in a Washington Post article.
Opponents, however, said the bill is unconstitutional and that it could have unintended consequences.
Scientists unearth Incan mummies in Peru
Archaeologists have unearthed thousands of mummies from a site in Peru.
The scientists, of Peru's National Institute of Culture, have discovered at least 2,200 bodies so far. The burial site, on the outskirts of Lima, may contain as many as 15,000 bodies.
The bodies were buried over a 75-year period ending about 1740, leading scientist Guillermo Cock said in a Washington Post article.
The individuals mummified were both men and women, of all ages and social classes, so the discovery represents "the perfect sample" of Incan society, Cock said.
Although the mummies have already yielded new information about Incan society, examining all the bodies could take decades, he said.
