News In Brief

Virginia drivers now have one more way to display their patriotism and remembrance of the victims of Sept. 11 - "Fight Terrorism" license plates.

State officials unveiled the new plates in Washington, D.C., yesterday morning on a site overlooking the repaired section of the Pentagon.

The left side of the plate features a pentagon shaped border surrounding an American flag and the World Trade Center towers depicted as the "11" in "9-11-01."

Across the bottom of the plate in bright red lettering are the words "Fight Terrorism."

The letters "FT" appear on the right. Anyone who was one of the first responders to the Pentagon attack is invited to apply to have the letters "FR" (first responder) replace "FT."

Virginia officials presented the first plate to Sheri Burlingame, the widow of Capt. Charles F. "Chic" Burlingame III, whose hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 aircraft crashed into the Pentagon.

Burlingame will receive the special anti-terrorism plate "CPT 77" for her late husband's vehicle.

Virginia drivers can order the new plate on the Department of Motor Vehicle's Web site or at any branch office. The plate costs an extra $10 per year.

DMV officials said they expect the plates will become popular - they have already received more than 2,000 inquiries about the plates since they first were announced in May.

Del. Bob Hill, D-Fairfax, sponsored the legislation that made the plate possible. Hill worked in partnership with Vince Rotundo, a retired foreign service official from Falls Church, to develop the idea.

Rotundo now plans to travel to every state as well as Wahington D. C. to lobby for similar license plates.
