News in Brief

Yesterday U.Va. Vice President and Provost Gene Block froze the hiring search for three vice provost positions. The positions oversee faculty recruitment and retention, academic programs and public service.

Block cited the unpredictability of the next round of state funding cuts as the reason to halt the search.

A mix of state money and funds from other sources would have funded the salaries.

The University has enacted a hiring freeze on all new faculty since last November.

U.Va. Medical Center nurse faces further felony charges

A Fluvanna County grand jury this week indicted 39-year-old Christopher Fuerst on five counts of felony. Fuerst is a nurse in the U.Va. Medical Center intensive care unit, but is currently on leave without pay.

The Fluvanna charges include one count of forcible sodomy and four counts of sexual battery. Fuerst's next court date in Fluvanna is set for Oct. 3.

Fuerst is also charged with two counts of felony in Charlottesville General District Court that include sexual battery of a minor and using a communications system to promote sexually explicit materials involving children. His preliminary hearing in general district court is scheduled for Sept. 26.

Fuerst was arrested June 28 after an undercover Albemarle detective arranged a meeting with him over the Internet. He is accused of having sex with a 13-year-old Fluvanna girl whom he met on the Internet.
