Six Charlottesville teens face assault charges
Six Charlottesville teenage boys and one 15-year-old girl who call themselves "The Belmont Crew" were arrested by police yesterday on charges of assaulting a male Charlottesville high school student.
The beating occurred on Sept. 16 near the Charlottesville High School campus in McIntire Park, during which the victim suffered a fractured nose and cuts to the head and face.
Charlottesville city police chief Tim Longo and school superintendent Ron Hutchinson said there is a zero-tolerance policy in such cases.
Currently, six of the seven suspects, all of whom are white and have attended Charlottesville High School, are being confined at the Blue Ridge Detention Center.
Nourthbound Pepsi truck spills fuel on Route 29
A fuel spill occurred on Route 29 yesterday morning when a fuel line broke on a Pepsi truck during the portion of its drive between Seminole Court and the intersection of Branchlands Boulevard and Hillsdale Drive, all the way down to Greenbriar Drive.
The quantity leaked is still unknown according to Pepsi officials and county police.
Fumes are not believed to be a problem, as the state transportation department scattered absorbent sand to contain the spill and prevent fires.
The Charlottesville police department has said that cleanup would be unusually difficult, given the large area over which the gasoline was spread.
Fire fighters from the Seminole Trail Volunteer Fire Department responded to the incident. City fire marshall Bob Lowry said he is uncertain why his department was not notified.
According to Pepsi spokeswoman Francis Burns, the Virginia Department of Transportation is expected to dispose of the sand.
