City passes additional water use restrictions

For the second time in two months, Charlottesville City Council voted to restrict water consumption.

The Monday decision was made as reservoir water levels continued to drop, reaching 57.1 percent of capacity yesterday.

Charlottesville residents now are subject to a 50 percent rate increase on water use over 600 cubic feet --roughly 4,800 gallons -- per billing cycle.

The restrictions also prohibit car washing, including the operation of commercial car washes, as well as the use of showers at health or athletic clubs unless those clubs use low-flow showerheads.

In addition, all businesses and institutions now must present a written plan to reduce their water consumption by 20 percent to the city and must display signs at their main entrances, showers and restrooms indicating the water shortage.

Watering athletic fields, including those at the University, now is prohibited.

Cheryl Gomez, University director of utilities management, said the prohibition on watering athletic fields poses a potential hazard to those who use them.
