Weekend fire displaces residents in Kent House

A fire in a McCormick Road dormitory early Sunday morning displaced approximately 20 residents for the night .

At about midnight on Sept. 8, University police responded to a fire on the third floor of Kent House. The building was evacuated after resident staff smelled smoke in the building.

The local fire department responded and extinguished the fire. It did not cause any permanent damage.

Police are still investigating the cause of the incident but initial reports indicate that it was a small appliance fire. There were no injuries.

The University offered temporary accommodations in the International Residential College and Hereford Residential College to the residents of the hall where the fire occurred. However, many hall residents chose to sleep in the Kent student lounge or in friends' residences for the night.

Unidentified man killed after being struck by train

Albemarle County Police are investigating the death of an unidentified man who was struck by a train Saturday afternoon.

The man was struck near the Sherwood Farms subdivision of Albemarle, which is about two miles south of the University at the intersection of I-64 and US Rte. 29.

The man's body was found about 50 yards south of the I-64 overpass.

The crew of the train saw the man on the tracks and tried to warn him by sounding the whistle with no result. The northbound Norfolk-Southern freight train was headed to New Jersey from Georgia.
