College decisions not affected by terrorism

A poll of students who entered college this fall showed the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks did not affect their decisions about where to go to school.

According to the survey, a mere 5 percent of students entering four-year colleges and universities said the Sept. 11 attacks had a "significant influence on the kinds of colleges" they thought about attending.

Nor did the events of Sept. 11 deter or make students significantly less likely to study abroad. Only 5 percent of students said the attacks affected their plans to study abroad.

The Art & Science Group, a Baltimore-based research company, conducted the poll.

Georgetown official pays one million in sexual harassment damages

Earnest W. Porta Jr., the acting vice president and treasurer of Georgetown University, was forced by a federal jury last week to pay more than $1 million in a sexual harassment case.

The jury ordered Porta to pay $1 million in punitive damages, $50,000 in back pay and $40,000 in compensatory damages to Monica Estes, former Georgetown employee.

The jury agreed with Estes' claim in the case that Porta refused to promote her because she was a woman and because she became pregnant during her tenure at Georgetown.

The ruling also affirmed Estes' claim that Porta made sexually suggestive comments to female employees and failed to reprimand others who also did so.
