English professor struck at JPA crosswalk
English Prof. Cynthia Wall was struck by a vehicle heading westbound on Jefferson Park Avenue yesterday afternoon at approximately 7:00 p.m.
The driver of the vehicle, Janet Taylor, was unable to see Wall due to the low sun in her eyes, according to Charlottesville Police.
Wall was transported to the University Medical Center and was listed in fair condition yesterday at 11:30 p.m.
No charges were filed against the driver.
Williams has safe lead in primary for D.C. Mayor
Although the official results of the Washington, D.C., Democratic primary for mayor have not yet been announced, exit polls indicate Mayor Anthony Williams has a wide lead over his leading opponent, Anacostia minister Willie Wilson.
Because Williams' petition to be named on the ballot was rife with fraudulent names, including the signatures of celebrities Robert DeNiro and Martha Stewart, he was forced to run a write-in campaign for the Democratic nomination. Wilson also ran a write-in campaign.
Because the ballots are written and cannot be counted by machine, the official results will not be publicized for several days.
But a poll conducted by the Washington Post indicates that Williams led Wilson across the city in all voting districts, averaging a 3-1 lead citywide.
Four candidates did appear on the ballot, but election officials reported that 91 percent of the votes were write-ins.
Wilson's campaign suffered from inadequate funds, and early polls have predicted Williams will walk away from the primary victorious.
