University starts up pay-for-print at libraries
In efforts to implement its new printing policy, the University has installed card-swipe workstations in Alderman Library and the Science and Engineering Library.
The workstations allow students to use their Student IDs, Cavalier Advantage dollars or copycards to print.
The workstations are part of the University's plan to allow students to print 500 sides of pages per semester before paying a fee. Students who want to purchase additional pages now can do so from Printing and Copying Services.
Using cash, Visa, Mastercard or Cavalier Advantage, students can buy additional pages of printing for 10 cents each from Printing and Copying Services located in Alderman Library.
The University has set 100 sides of pages as the minimum additional purchase.
The University announced this summer that it would begin charging for printing as a way to cut costs in the wake of state budget costs.
D.C. Mayor proposes city tax increase, spending cuts
Washington, D.C., Mayor Anthony Williams proposed tax increases and spending cuts this week to deal with the city's budget problems.
Williams announced Monday to the D.C. Council a plan to raise taxes from 9.3 percent to 9.5 for city residents who earn over $50,000 a year and to raise the tax on cigarettes to one dollar per pack.
Washington, D.C., faces budget deficits as a result of the economic downturn. In Washington, the city government faces a shortfall of $323 million.
Besides the tax increases, Williams proposed spending cuts of $203 million to help close the budget gap.
Williams' plan included cuts of $61 million from the city's social services budget, $31 million from schools and $16 million from public safety.
The city's Board of Education President Peggy Cooper Cafritz said the cuts in school funding may force the city to layoff teachers and close schools.
