Local Wal-Mart violatesCity water restrictions

The local Wal-Mart retail store, located on Rte. 29 North, is the first Charlottesville business to face fines for violating mandatory water restrictions.

The Albemarle County Service Authority fined the business $500 yesterday after finding that it was illegally watering its outdoor plants. If the business violates the water restrictions again, Wal-Mart could face another fine of $1,000 and have its water shut off.

Two suspects arrested in VCU 'hate crime' assaults

Former Virginia Union University students Andy Roberts, 19, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Alain Jean-Baptiste, 18, of Richmond were arrested Tuesday in connection with assaults on two Virginia Commonwealth University students last week, according to VCU police.

The assaults took place outside a meeting of the Sexual Minority Student Association, a VCU gay-student organization. VCU police labeled the assaults "hate crimes."

Jean-Baptiste is charged with two counts of misdemeanor assault. Robert is charged with felony assault.

GMU law professor dies in flight lesson crash

Wesley J. Liebeler, 71, was killed yesterday when his plane crashed during a flight lesson. The crash killed Liebeler and his instructor. Investigators do not know who was at the controls when the crash occurred.

Liebeler was recognized as one of the world's leading experts on antitrust law.

He served on the Commission to Investigate the Assassination of President Kennedy.

Liebeler taught at George Mason for three years and remains a professor emeritus at UCLA, where he taught from 1965-1999.
