By aligning herself so closely to Lyndon LaRouche, a political extremist once indicted on charges of credit card fraud and conspiracy to obstruct justice, Nancy Spannaus may be undercutting her bid for John Warner's seat in the Senate, pundits say. Regardless, Spannaus continues to fight as one of two independent candidates challenging Warner with a campaign based on an alternative solution to Virginia's economic problems.
"There is no solution to the crisis by wielding the knife," she said in a recent policy statement on her Web site, in response to the recent wave of state budget cuts. "Budget cutting will only make the real economic crisis worse, and raising taxes in a depression where revenue is declining is a losing proposition."
Instead, Spannaus says she will push for an FDR-style "emergency infrastructure program" that would bolster the national air and rail transportation systems, boost productivity and create jobs.
"Senator Warner doesn't seem to recognize the depth of the crisis at all," she said. "Catastrophe can be averted if the federal policy returns to a Roosevelt-like commitment to the general welfare."
