Maryland candidates for Congress up rhetoric

With less than two weeks remaining before the Nov. 5 election, the two main candidates in the closely-contested race in Maryland's 8th District for the House of Representatives met for a 30-minute debate on Tuesday.

Pundits have identified Republican Constance A. Morella, a longtime incumbent of the House, as one of the most endangered representatives in the House. Her opponent, Christopher Van Hollen Jr., criticized the House Republicans for their opposition to gun control and argued that it was necessary for Democrats to win the six seats they need to regain the majority.

Morella contested that she is a strong proponent of gun control and women's rights.

Morella faces unprecedented opposition since her district was redrawn to include a more heavily Democratic region.

NCAA considers relaxing academic requirements

The National Collegiate Athletic Association is considering rules that would make it easier for athletes with low test scores to participate in Division I athletics.

Currently athletes with SAT scores lower than 820 are not allowed to participate in Division I sports.

The NCAA's Division I Management Panel approved of the idea of lowering the minimum SAT score for eligibility to 400.

The panel recommended that students with lower SAT scores be required to have higher high school grade point averages to attain eligibility.

For example, a student with a 400 SAT score would have to have a 3.55 GPA in order to play.

The panel also approved tougher regulations for athletes to maintain their eligibility once they already are in college.

The new proposal requires athletes to complete 40 percent of their graduation requirements by the beginning of their junior to stay eligible.

Students also would have to maintain a college GPA that is 90 percent of their school's requirement to graduate.

The Division I Board of Directors will meet next Thursday, Oct. 31 to approve or reject the new eligibility standards.
